--> So I finally saved up and bought a Macbook a few weeks ago. After using an iMac G5 at work for several months my biases were solidified, making the purchase so much easier. I'm loving it still. It's a beautiful machine. Of course, it's probably a little too beautiful (darn apple and their shiny white plastic that's so prone to scratches.)

So far the obstacle of finding UB apps hasn't been too limiting. At least Live is UB now, and Automat is great and free. I really like how everything is tied together so well in this operating system.

Of course, I think the real joy is just having a portable machine in general. That was my primary goal, and it just happened that at the time I was ready to make a purchase Apple came out with these babies. Now hopefully I can start doing things outside of my house with my music.

I'm still a little confused about the use of Apple's audio components. Well, I can use them fine. I think what I'm confused about is why they exist. Is it just a proprietary platform? So far I haven't created any music entirely on this thing yet, but I plan on it, and finding some substitute synths to swap with the ones in my pre-macbook songs.
The quest begins!

AUs are built using Mac Os X Core Audio APIs, which give access to the most common audio functions to manipulate audio streams. thus, relying on code which is already optimized for mac os x, they should be more efficient and stable than other plugin formats.

of course it is a portable computer, so their performance cannot be really compared, but how does it feel compared to the g5?
Recent blogs: first blog!

The shiny white plastic improves with scratching! it's especially nice when the scratches get a little bit of grunge in them. looks worn.

HAHA! here is to the linear power of old mac platforms and the imminant threat that looms with its eventual open source architechture. I wonder when the Mac bubble will burst. I give it a year before you see all types of issues that never used to be problems.

Keep in mind I used to work on a dual core G4 with DP4 and a bunch of fun shit. I just got tired of having to close one app to open another despite my 2 gigs of ram and a MOTU 2408 mk3. Sigh. I want Kyma and Ill be done with it.

I got a macbook too, but i'm wishing i kept my powerbook now. the line input is fucked and the hard disc makes this high pitch whiney sound. i almost threw it out the window yesterday.

I had a dual G4 and now have a G5 and have always been able to have at least three or four apps working simultaneously with less than 2 gigs memory.

i didn't buy a macbook in the end because i have sense. my laptop is faster than a mac, and half the price, with a 3 inch bigger screen too. it also looks better and can actually run software on it. and when windows vista comes out, it will basically be osx as well.

ps not trying to be an arse, just feeling smug. i dont very often get to feel smug so please let me have it!

Mmmmmmm I beg to differ.
Personal preferences, I know! We buy the machines we like. It's good to have choices.

race4prize what kind of machine do you have? I was having second thoughts about going the macbook route myself to save myself some cash. But with similar specs, the price was either close to or more expensive than the Macbook (even with the AppleCare added).

go pc

. Its been modular for years and you will get a wholesale deflation as the two products become more competitive. My 2 cents.

Yeah Fredo, I could have 3 programs open with mine two. But the volatility of the system would be phenominal.

Do you go through alot of Harddrives that way? I sure would if I wanted to run 60 track sessions all year every day. But if I only did one thing at a time, the drives were pristine.

Goofy Voice :Sumpin Wrooooooroing here. :sizzling sound: ;)

if i'm working on web or graphics stuff on my macbook pro, i will routinely have the following open and running: photoshop, interarchy, bbedit, mail, firefox, ical, itunes and word. never shows any sign of slowing or strain. ever.

FACT: macbook pro's LOVE beer on their keyboards.
