Oct 17th: Now much improved with Jonbro's help! Re-install script for seamless integration with menu bar. Click "google search" and search box appears on every page on em411. Special thanks to Jonbro!!!
-----
After reading comments by some people wishing for a more conventional site search I decided to learn how to use greasemonkey to add a little google search window directly to em411's main interface. It only works in mozilla/firefox with the greasemonkey plugin.
install script
more information on greasemonkey
Also, my greasemonkey programming skills are.. well, almost nonexistant. So if anybody has any thoughts on how to make it better let me know and I'll change it.
have a good one,
-q.

could you not have stuck it inline on the left? it takes up a fair bit of vertical screen estate as it is, nice work though!

I originally wanted to have it stuck in there to the right of the "help" on the black bar, but I couldn't figure out how to do that. The method I used to add this to the page adds the search form as a div between named elements on the page. Does anybody know another way to do this? Or a better place on the page to stick the form?

try and put it in the left div that contains 'most recent blogs', the 'gearwant' link etc etc
dunno how to do it, never looked at greasemonkey. seems bloody powerful though looking at what you and cbit have done.

You need to get an element by name. The left side is called "sideColumn" and you could stick in a div called "sideModule" in there. Likewise, the right side is called "rightColumn" and you could stick in something called a "rightModule". Firebug is essential for learning the structure of a webpage and being able to pick it apart.
I'm sad no one remember my now useless greasemonkey contribution, reverse your friends. Oh well.

ok, I've just updated the script with a new version with the search thing is nestled right above gearwant in the left column.
(looks like you just install the script again and it replaces the old one with the new version)
I also set it so the search only appears on the main page-- does that seem like a good way to do it? or are there other pages the search should be on?
edit: UH OH- if you click on it it takes you to gearwant.... hold on a sec.
edit2: ok, it's sorted. I had to move it up one more DIV. weird. Sorry about that- it's been a learning experience!
