--> HI!

My radio show tonight, Monday the 23rd, entitled "Optic Echo Presents" on Portland Radio Authority is dedicated to those of you who may or may not have heard of the Amen break. It's the sample that pretty much makes up a good chunk of the drum lines to the genre of Jungle or Drum N Bass. Now, I'm no Jungle DJ, but it's really really importand for many reasons.

For the 1st hour of my set, I'll be giving a history of the Amen from its original sample to hip hop to electronic music. The second hour will be some mixes that use the Amen, then an upbeat set to finish the show mixed live on 2 turntables.

I'm streaming live tonight from 6-8 PST on link. You can call up and talk while I'm on the air at 503-22BLAST. Hope you enjoy ...

Such a good idea for a show! I will be listening!

Be sure to give Gregory C. Coleman his due.

what's a amen breaker?

er, break, i mean.

It's that slight pause that happens after you give thanks to the lord j.c.

Here you go!

oh yeah, right... and there's that christian drummer who made played a 4 bar hommage to the amen-pause in the song "amen, brother".
would you consider "funky drummer" part of the amen break ethos, or just the "amen, brother" sample and nothing else?

This has pretty everything you could want for your show

oh man.... if you don't know about the amen break by now you're into the wrong hobby!

funky drummer, IMO, is more sampled than amen. most sampled break of all time, probably.

i'd have to agree with you.
it was THE hiphop drum sample of '92

Here's a website with a video, presented like a lecture, charting the importance of the Amen. Very thoughtfully presented IMO.

Don't forget the Apache in terms of 'amount of times sampled' either, and add Think and Cold Sweat for being there or thereabouts, just to name a couple. The Amen would be my favourite though.

Sounds like fun!

That didactic video is so amazing. I wet my pants.

here link is a file with a clip from that video, but you gotta have Bhaji's Loops to get at the WAV...
