--> So I had a lecture on international relations the other day.

In it my lecturer got on to the topic of 'imperial decline', where an empire overstretches itself and this triggers its' downfall.

We were talking mostly about the british empire's recession from the asian region, but my lecturer went on to say he saw the signs of this happening now to the US.

As there are sometimes interesting political discussions here (before the dick jokes set in), and that this is the only forum I frequent with a lot of Americans, I thought I'd ask for your opinions.

as the penguin once said......burn baby, burn

well, other than the USA's middle east democracy at the barrel of a gun program the only real empire like characteristics we show in an obvious way are corporate. the new empires are multinational corporate entities that extend their tenticles into every place they can. soon they will colonize your mind.

the USA will pretty much always sabotage anything in it's neighborhood that starts to develop a strong government or a gov't that's not loyal to the interests of the USA. see south/middle america for examples.

this empire will crumble from the inside.. after spending jillions on 'liberating' nations in the middle east and funneling all our tax coinage to corporations' offshore accounts.

that.. and a populous that will continue to be under-educated, un-informed, spoiled, diverted, bamboozled, provided w/guns/booze/drugs and then locked up in corporate owned private prisons that double as customer service centers on the cheap for any corporation anywhere.

so.. in a nutshell yeah.

yes, ignatius hit it on the nose. corporate imperialism.

Karl Marx predicted that capitalism would branch out and imperialize in its death throes, as a way of trying to save itself. things must change, however, its the nature of evolution.

it's kind of neat to be able to see it all fall apart...

yes. we are so lucky to be alive in this time period of beautiful decay. plus computers are cheap as shit!

hopefully the apocalypse brings some good restaurants along with it. mcdonalds sucks.

all kidding aside, i saw a lady on the TV the other day that spent 20 million dollars to go out to space with the Russian shuttles. think about how many people's lives she could have made a thousand times better. she chose to waste it on some stupid vacation. ridiculous. i see people everyday that don't see anything wrong with rampant consumerism, and i just don't get it. 1/3 of the world is starving and Americans spend $5 on a cup of cold coffee.

yes but we give all those poor starving people great jobs picking those coffee beans and chopping down their forests to make our paper cups w/the little brown things that keep your hands from burning. ;)

i think there should be an equation for charity. say.. you make over x amount of dollars then you should give 5% of your income to the non-profit charities of your choice every year. if you don't then you you have to wear a turd on your head for 2 days of every week for that year.

seems likea small amount of $$ but really.. if you make 100K a year that's 5K. if you make 10million then that's er.. someone do da maf.

anyway.. w/the amount of millionaires in the states these days that would be a crap load of cash for the less fortunate or an awful lot of smelly hair.

i dont see anything wrong w/enjoying life so long as you give something back... make some kind of contribution to the greater good.. your time.. your art/music/laughter etc... your boobs.. whatever...

10 mi x 5% = 500,000

for the record, i don't see a problem with enjoying the fruits of your labor, as long as you're not robbing other people's resources.
i think they should take all the money in the world, and re-distribute........ i'd STILL be better off.

redistribution of the means of production ... hmmm, where have i heard this before?

link

it's a good read, short too. ;)
you might find this pretty interesting too.

yea.. this empire has to crumble (eventually-empires have gone on much longer in the past).., but I think there's a damn good chance they'll start WWIII in the process.

by the way ignatius.. the turd hat idea is a very good one.
