there are cheeper upgrade paths to the albeton. if you get a soundcard that comes with albeton lite or whatever you can upgrade that for like 250. similar deal exists with cubase le - cubase sx
FL studio is actually good enough to make nice musics. some workarounds but its very fast workflow wise. only prob with it is that it gets no respect.
cost like 50 or 100. lifetime free upgrades.
music production is an expensive hobby, but there are tones of free or inexpensive things to play with until you can afford the 500$-900$ sequencer/hosts

i *heard* that there's a workaround for ableton's anti piracy thing.
you just have to find and delete some hidde files.
don't know the names of these files though...

A lot of my music has a live/improvised element to it, that's why I use Live, I also use vsts and rewire reason into it.
