--> so i finally decided to play around with ableton to see what the fuss is about. not too long ago I bought Richie Hawtin's E9: Transitions, which is so far the best 5.1 dvd music disc I ever bought. anyway, in the interview section of the dvd he goes on about how ableton w/ pro tools plays a big part in this surround sound masterpiece....anyway, ableton looks like it will be a great tool for playing techno live situations. right away i was dragging and dropping beats in the Session mode. It's a helluva fun time to make walls of funkybreaks too. I'm not sure if it's what I want for programing at the moment, but from the way it looks and sounds from the example tracks, this program seems to have everything you need to do it all from start to finsh to performing.

ableton is like a jack of all trades, it can do alot of things well, but its not amazing for any specific thing.

hm, can't really subscribe to that, I think ableton is amazing for live performance, despite the feature list getting more and more bloated. at the end of the day it's the only sequencer (except max/msp, but in a different way) that gives me the flexibility to break out of a complex arrangement into an improvisation and back again.

I had the Ableton Digidesign version without
midi so that sucked. I need the latest version.

i meant to say, in itself its amazing but certain features of it can be improved (reason why people use reaktor, reason etc. in addition to ableton)

its developed so much over the last few versions its really unfair to label it a 'master of none'. people seem to be viewing it a bit different to myself in that they are sitting down at it expecting it to be an all in one programming application when it began as something that was supposed to be a performance instument. its like shouting at your guitar cos doesnt have midi sync

I've actually been recently using ableton as a non em DAW. So far, so good.
