So I go to mills college.. ahhhh. Well here is a little article that mills college news paper wrote in their "our opinon" section of their paper. Basically all the people who work for the paper have to sign off on this... I love the progressive thoughts in this piece .. it warms my heart!
Little Red Riding Hood did everything she could to ward off the Wolf. We're supposed to believe that it was her fault he was so "hungry," that she was responsible for his behavior. The women of Mills, like Red, are consistently expected to take on the burden of Mills mens' ignorance and arrogance. We know that all men are not wolves, but we're really confused as to how so many wolves to to lurk around our woods. And we want the Wolf to take responsibility for his own crude self.
We came here to focus on our personal growth, not to have the male gaze focused on us.
We may call this place an "all-women's college," but that's obviously not the case. Not all of our undergrads identify as women, we have a lot to learn from our male professors, and let's face it, lots of us want cute boys around. What we mean by "all women" is we are a women-centered, women-celebrating college.
This is one of the only places where our needs are the priority and for many of us, it may be the only time in our lives where the community and the institution assumes we are powerful, capable, intelligent and distinctly valuable. Women's education isn't just about separating by gender, it's a value system. So, it would be nice to know that men here are on that same page.
We all have a story. At The Weekly, we're repeatedly hearing about male Public Safety officers being aggressive and chauvinistic towards students. While we've been surprised by the politeness of some construction workers, we also know some students are living in harassment zones. We've had male staff members awkwardly hit on us often with unreciprocated hopes to take the relationship off campus.
One of our exciting new male hires this semester is cocky, self-important and stifling. We hear male graduate students talk disparagingly about Mills women, their bodies and their sexuality. In communal, co-ed spaces we even find ourselves doing most of the cleaning.
This isn't about how dudes suck. We love the warm, helpful and conscious Mills men. This is about the kinds of men we want on campus, and the relationships we expect to have. We want to be able to go to Founders wearing our pajamas or our sluttiest gear, and we want to be respected. We want to buy bagels and juice without getting "bedroom eyes." We want power dispersed throughout our classes, not just standing at the front of the room.
When men apply for hire and admission, we should ask some extra questions. When they get here, we might offer a mandatory sensitivity training to at least minimize the unacceptable ways students are treated. When we arrive on campus to move into dorms at the beginning of the year, we should never be surprised to find men living across the hall. We appreciate that there are now women-only and no-EF hours in the fitness center, but if there's a need for that, deeper problems need addressing.
This is a call to Mills administration. Women's undergraduates experiences should be the priority and as the school grows, please keep in mind why many of us are here.
This is a call to all the men at Mills. Check yourself, and stop asking us out!

wow that is the most sexist and insulting thing I have ever read. what is this college trying to say? "MEGAN'S ROOM! NO BOYS ALLOWED"
When is "boys only" time at the gym? They expect this mountain of sensitivity directed toward them, and then publish an article of the most blatant generalizations about men...like we're the wolves to their innocent little red riding hood. Thats demeaning to everybody involved.
Lets just reverse the genders in a passage as an example.
"When women apply for hire and admission, we should ask some extra questions. When they get here, we might offer a mandatory sensitivity training to at least minimize the unacceptable ways students are treated. We appreciate that there are now men-only and no-EF hours in the fitness center, but if there's a need for that, deeper problems need addressing. This is a call to Mills administration. It makes me grit my teeth. I hope somebody agrees with me.

I agree with you deltasleep. it definitely swings both ways.
...the weirdest pickup line I ever got was
( i was hanging a poster for a show at a community college campus.)
"those are some cool sunglasses. (smiled at me for a moment)
"oh thank you."
and as I was leaving I swore i heard her say:
"they make you look like roy-orbison."

well, one must take into consideration the type of woman to go to an "all-girls" school. there is a reason why they chose to go and they most likely had oppourtunities to also go to a co-ed school. the fact that they chose to go to such a school and must deal with men propbably pisses them off.

I would also like to point out that mills sits right in the right the heart of east oakland.. "the killing fields". It's kind of funny for me to read stuff like this when I hear gun shots every night along with the police helicopters.. these things put everything else like that stupid story in perspective.
Though that article is very bay area white rich "liberal" talk.. but that is just my east coast opinion.

thats the trouble with the way feminism is interpretted by my generation- the whole girl power thing. It's infuriating, especially here in the south. You want to be empowered, in charge, but then you want me to open the door for you? With the power comes the responsibility- and thats where girl power draws the line. They want to do a lot of high kicks with guitars and run non profit charities to teach girls how to play instruments, but then they write things like this where they get to play knowledgeable, competent, etc. AND get to play victim at the same time.
It's like feminism is in this permanent adolescence for 20 years.
And don't get me started on the anti-porn feminists. wtf.
I'm not women-hating, I'm man liberating. Or something.

olympia was a hotbed of feminism-some of which was educated, powerful and deep, some of which was more like this kinda whiny "change the world for me/ you will never understand how you're oppressing me because you just are a man" stuff. the two extremes seem like they tend to tolerate each other, kinda like how the various anti-american intervention movements have the diehards like nuns who go to central america, work with poor folk and get murdered and then the folks who just walk around with a comfy lil chip on their shoulder.
it's just college. people trying on new ideas-sometimes rolling a 7, sometimes getting snake-eyes. like the dumbass who wrote on the ground of red square at evergreen "THE ECONOMY IS THE ENEMY". that's quality.

whats disappointing is that the university community makes a lot jobs for people where their only function is to generate stupid ideas for 17 year olds to write on the toe of their chuck taylors.

wow ... seriously ... wow.
i agree with deltasleep. and i also agree with astroid.
maybe if Mills college could make a mandatory "life situations" class for the girls to take ... just so they are prepared for such dire circumstances as unwanted affection and unwelcome gestures, instead of having the university play nanny for them. i guess it is a horrible curse to be a beautiful girl sometimes, but these ladies just have to bear their crosses for society until they run the world, right?
