--> Create digital music's main guy Peter Kirn was writing about these, and it got me thinking about my own --

1. Balance work and music.
I’m taking a “real” full-time Web gig this year, so it’s going to be a challenge to keep Emulsion going at the level I did in 2006.

2. Stop buying/thinking about gear so much!
Basically every electronic musician I know faces this to a greater or lesser extent.

3. Don’t rely on last years sounds/production tricks
I’m intending to put in some quality time with Live, FM8 (which is really inspiring btw) and Reaktor, getting out of my usual Reason-based habits.

4. Stop programming drums using ReDrum (X0X style)
It’s so easy but can end up so robotic! I intend to write more drum parts using the Live piano roll and Battery. Plus make use of those little pads on the remote sl.

5. Rework my live set to be both more improvisational and more club friendly.
I saw Apparat live at Mutek 2005, and he’s what I have in mind when I think about reworking my set. A ton of energy, synced atari-ish visuals, and a sense that he was completely in control of his output.

6. Practice more.
See above. It makes a huge difference in writing music as well as performing, no doubt.

Oh yeah and #7 - no more food/water/beer whatever at my studio desk! I spilled half a glass of water into my remote sl the other day and then was sitting there with a hair dryer trying to keep it from permanently fucking up.

What do you guys have?

i'm getting back into my reason-based habits. my new rule of thumb for electronic production is this: i can prepare loops using anything (live instruments, all manner of vsts, etc.), but the final product has to be a standalone reason file.

i'm trying to see if forcibly restricting myself will force me to be more creative

There is definitely something to be said for Reason's self-contained approach. I think after using it so intensively for an album, an EP and a bunch of random stuff I'm burning out on it. I actually am thinking about bringing it into my live set however! I think prepping a bunch of REX files and loops and triggering them from live would give me some fun things I can't do in Live.

bah, resolutions are stupid...everyone should think of resolutions to make their lives better weekly, not yearly :-P

But I wanna pretty much do what I did last year but better without university lingering over me... =)

i will try to listen more to the music i make

quit smoking. i guess a lot of people here are doing that; a positive spin-off from what jdg's gone through. 3 days so far and it's been easy - but i used to go for three days without trying when i was smoking so...

musically - more structure, most of my tracks are just doodles that i keep tweaking and filtering until they sound somewhat polished; i need to actually write tracks and record the parts methodically to get some really well produced material.

hey jon.
same here about the smoking. it strangely enough it's running smooth so far.
best of luck for you to get through the storm of stopping

My gf is working on the quitting smoking thing too and it's tough (on me too!) -- but it's about time. The air quality is shitty enough in chicago without adding smoking to it.
