--> Last month there was a very useful thread about the best software for compressing audio to MP3. I recall there was a consensus. Unfortunately, I can't find the blog now. Can somebody please tell me the name of that program. Perhaps there are several others I didn't read about that are of equal quality. If so, I'd like to know about those too.

Thanks.

LAME? link

Lame is really the only way to go. If you run windows, I recommend razorlame link as a frontend, althought it's certainly not required. just makes things easier, especially for when working with batches of files.

anyone know of a mp3 converter for OSX that u can right click a file and go "convert to mp3" or somthing?

i use an old version of acid 4.0 to convert to mp3's lolz.

as mrpanda said... lame + razorlame is a good combo. lame produces quality mp3s at 192, and razorlame is a god-send for batch jobs. the only thing missing is an auto-tagger.

i've also heard good things about fraunhofer. anyone have experience with it?

yes, when you run windows in parallels

i normally use the batch process function in peak. nearly as comfortable as right click

I'm afraid not, but here's a pretty good piece of freeware for batch conversions:

didn't you hack a shell script in osx for this very porpose?

i did..

also, u can wrap a shell script in applescript, make an application out of it, and bundle that as a contextual menu...

i've seen it done with other things.. im just not smart enuf to figure that out.

Well for me its winlame with the lame encoder perfect for converting many unusual format to mp3 plus you can expend the input with winamp input plugin

Thanks guys.

I just started doing some test compressions with Lame. Specifically, I used the LameBrain front end. The quality is far beyond what I've heard from comparable sized MP3s.

How do you guys think Lame MP3 compression stacks up against Apples AAC format?

WinLame is a nice frontend for lame encoder. try it!

There is an iTunes-LAME applescript/plugin, which is what I use. Very handy: link

yea its called itunes
