--> All right. This blog is all about Kool Keith appreciation.

"You're girl screams, where'd Kool Keith go?"

I have to say that old school hip hop probably influences my electronic music more than anything, more than Aphex Twin & Venetian Snares, more than Amon Tobin.

At the top of my hip-hop heap is Kool Keith. This dudes rhymes always bring a smile to my face. Whenever I hear Kool Keith rappin, it's just sweet. I heard Easy E before I listened to Kool Keith, and once I heard Kool Keith I realized Easy E is a poor man's Kool Keith.

Anyways, I don't really know what it is, I just think he's one of the funnest MC's to listen to rappin. I'd say second is either Son Doobie (whichdoobieub era) or Guru. I want to somehow tribute Kool Keith with a slammin tune, but I don't just wanna sample "You whack mc's" or any of his other prolific rhymes. I want the music to embody his energy. This is gonna be tough, it may include a sample, it's gonna sound like Ultramagnetic MC's phat beats, but I don't know exactly how or if I'll be able to pull it off.

The best I could probably do is write some fresh beats, mix in some old-school sounding samples (funk, horns), buy Critical Beatdown on vinyl so I can scratch in Kool Keith easily, and go to town. I'm sure I'll be able to come up with sumthin I'm happy with, but I don't know if I'll be able to do sumthin that Kool Keith fans appreciate.

Hell Yeah! Kool Keith is babdest MC ever! No one can flow as original or embrace wierdness as well as he does.

"Yo SkyCab hand me my platinum suitcases"

Yeah he is something i agree. But Analog Brothers wasn't that great at all, even thou it was ice-t and keith together. One that had high expectations on my side atleast.

yeah, for Kool Keith, Ultramagnetic MC's is probably still the best bet

Some of the tracks on Dr. Doom and Black Elvis/Lost in Space are rap genius.

I recommend checking out a terrific late 70s band called Slave. Kool Keith refers to them at least once and has even sampled them a few times.

By the way, is his new record good? I think it's called Dr. Nogato.

I was sadly disappointed with his live performance on this last tour of his. I had the pleasure of being in one of the opening acts, but ended up being kinda bummed and went to the bar in the next room instead of watching the rest of his set. Seemed like the place cleared out by the time he was done.

I am a HARDCORE kool keith fan but even I think he has fell off and become waaaay too self indulgent over the past few years. he is spreading himself way too thin these days. i think he released 6 or 7 albums last year! not many of them anywhere near the classic material he was making right up until say 2001. my favourite album of his from last year was the 'project polaroid' album he did, with production by tomc3. the production is quite reminiscent of his classic 'dr octagon' album. 'mr nogatco - nogatco rd' is ok, but project polaroid is a better record overall.

my favourite kool keith lps (the ones i listen to most often) :

ultramagnetic mcs - critical beatdown
ultramagnetic mcs - the four horsemen
kool keith + godfather don - the cenobites
kool keith - sex style
dr dooom - first come, first served
kool keith - spankmaster
kool keith - the personal album

and that is exactly why you are hardcore

edit: he gave me daps once... Ive never washed my fist
hip-hop influences my electronic music more than electronic music too........ and kool keith (dr. octogon) was my first expose... now, though, mf doom is my super hero

Guru is better.

sorry , i'm not a kool keith fan. i think the guy's hooks are the worst in the rap biz. his verses are good, though.

hehehe. i may be a koolkeith fanboy but that doesnt mean i automatically like everything he does, but i do still check out everything he releases. ;) i still check for everything the dude puts out because i know he has the potential to be truly great again if he actually bothered to take a little more time and care over his releases. a 3 note descending bassline and some repetative beats with keith ranting over the top does not a good record make. he always amuses with his lyrics but the songs arent always there nowadays and he really needs to admit to himself that his production skill really arent all that. imo keith is way more creative when he's doing a 'character' record rather than doing straightup kool keith. have you heard "the commissioner" or "the commissioner 2"?

see? HARDCORE!!! ::puts arms over head in an X::

oh fuck off. that was understood. hence the "hehehe" at the beginning of my follow-up post. yes, i should have wrote "i used to be a HARDCORE kool keith fan..." but that was a quick post before bed. so what? i guess you are a HARDCORE pedant?

I know what your saying Kid, about being a hardcore fan but not likin everything from the guy. Some of my favorite artists I really can only listen maybe half their stuff.

srry, you are right, i overstepped my boundaries. ::puts arms down::
