--> they're better than most pop but their 'epic' sound is so inflated and histrionic. thom yorke is a self-obsessed douchebag. the hype around them is so ridiculous.

i like some of their early stuff, and some of their stuff from kid A ain't bad, but cmon, these guys ain't no visionaries. At their best, they are about as good as Joshua Tree, an album which i like well, an influential album, but is just pop music, at the end of the day.

If ppl just talked about them like they were a good band, rather than making them out to be god's gift to humanity, then i wouldn't be ranting about it.

I WANT TO ARGUE TASTE. IF ITS POPULAR IT MUST BE BAD.

thanks for saying it like it is. i never "got" them. the thought that they were doing anything new or extraordinary never crossed my mind. to me it's like Depeche Mode with a worse singer and less beats + emo aspect. I especially don't understand why electronic music fans deem them "acceptable pop". Damn it, I actually prefer Trent Reznor's whining. ;)

oh yes they are quite overrated.
but i personally accept them as ANOTHER good band amongst many good bands.
i don't care about the hype.

i actually haven't bought any of their albums since Kid A. only heard the later ones a few times at other peoples appartments.
i wonder why they are so accepted by the "mainstream"...

edit:
i love thom yorke's singing btw.
i just think that the songs could be better

i blame it on autechre.

The obsessive fans can become a bit much, but I feel pretty much the same way about fans Aphex Twin, Squarepusher and about a million other bands. I just ignore it and enjoy the music for what it is, or else I'd go mad.

That said, it's not really my kind of thing most of the time and I'd rather listen to the likes of Gentle Giant (who were doing similar "experiments" with electronic music decades before).

Johnny Greenwood is the shit. They didn't ask to be big, big stars. Also: if you were younger than, say, 15 years old when The Bends came out you might not have enough perspective to slam them. Hard as it may be to imagine the music you take for granted today didn't used to exist and Radiohead is one of the groups of people that got us where we are. That's all I'm going to say.

douchebag is such a strong term. bt is a douchebag.

radiohead are paperbag. not as bad as plastic but better than douche.

Every autechre album I bought was a waste of money. They only reason I bought them was b/c I heard from so many people that they are cool. They aren't anything special.

i like them a lot. OK computer is fantastic.. amazing guitar tones. kid A is great imo.

i blame pink floyd.. and autechre

the engineer/producer they work with is great. does really creative things so if you like the sound of their records you can give him some credit. i guess haivng castle to record in helps.. nothing like a 40ft stone hallway to use as a reverb chamber. "hey thom.. we'll put the mic here.. you go way down there and sing real loud.. i bet it'll sound cool.."

he's very good at what he does and quite versatile. he doesn't just do "radiohead music".
oh- good point n9 and very well said.

Definitely, Nigel Godrich has produced a lot of great sounding records.

they tend to (in my opinion) get hyped too much. some of their stuff is good, but no "amazing"

if you had never heard Autechre or Aphec twin or anything of that nature, Radiohead might seem quite visionary.
And most ppl have never heard Autechre , of teh Aphex Twin, or anything of that nature.

I like radiohead okay, not great song writers but some very interesting ideas sonically. I don't enjoy Yorke's voice.

i don't see any similarities between the aphex and teh radiohead...

you've probably never heard any rock music then.
