well, spent about 2 1/2hrs on this mixit thingy. I have used NO effects (!!) but I wanted to run it by people to see:

- am i allowed to use the EQ as much as I have (which has basically filtered out all the bass / mid on some of the samples)
- is it cool - or shall i trash it and start summat new tomorrow?

here it is: link

man, like i said before, i love constraints / new inputs etc...!!!! this has been great fun - THANKS!! - I would have used lots of effects by now normally, but not using them has made an interesting sound...i think.

cheers, sam
*sups guinness*

(the structure and finish on certain bits is just rought for now)

Sounds good to me, definitely persevere with it.

I'm not sure who uploaded that bouzouki stuff but it's wonderful (and currently dominating my 28 second Mixit53).

agreed - the bouzouki rocks!

edit: can you do more than one tune for a mixit?

you can do whatever you want with the samples... doesnt have to even sound like the original any more AT ALL. You can take a half-second sound and stretch it to 2 minutes, play it through reverb, delay, granular processing, eq, etc, then take a 2 second piece of that long time stretch and have it be a pad noise for your song. It doesn't matter. Just don't use synths or external sources.

BOOM I GOT YOUR MIXIT I GOT YOUR MAN

yeah, i was just followig the unofficial rules...or summat...which state - NO FX...or specifically:

No timestretch, no filters, no delay, reverb, bitcrush, etc. Samples must be used as-is, dry as a bone, out of the box. EQ is allowed, because without that, we're guaranteed to get a bunch of muddy goop that no one wants to listen to. Think of it this way: if it isn't on your standard mixing desk, it's out.

Re-recording your sample in the stairwell is also out. Technically, that's what your $250 Wizooverb plugin is trying to emulate. Smile

There's probably some threshold where a "treatment" becomes an effect. Is overdriving your mixer channels an effect? I think that's subject to some interpretation. Just steer clear of 99% of all your plugins and you're headed in the right direction.

Did someone say no FX!!?
This is the mixit for me. I'm a gona go get those samples now.

Like the track samski... Like the little tick drums... and the guitar(?) fits really well.

cool. get to it mister adcB the guitar is the aforementioned bouzouki!

so samski... compressors they is ok yes no ?

fuck knows adcB...i'm a NOOB with a capital N O O B...well, to mixit anyway. ahhhhh...see you posted on the mixit board. good. will get a better response there!
Ok, Bleen says no compression.
This will be hard.

Your beats are pretty "snappy" there mr samski... perhaps you got some changes to do?

that's why i was checkin...it's mainly just randomly chopped wavs and and i loaded bleen's whole drum sample into battery and the used the velocity to change the sample start position, with a really short decay on the sample...which gives some of the snap.

no compression used...but like i said, the EQ is quite hard on a couple of bits, to try to bring out the bits I want

*shrugs* if it's illegal, i'll survive i guess but i'd like to do it by the book...

hmm. Attack in battery, very creative. I think that's legal, no FX for sure, basically modifying the fades of the wav.
But I'd even argue that compression is legal, also doing the same thing... but so be it... I'm into "no compression".
I guess the point of this "challenge" is to do just that, challenge ourselves.

edt: But rereading, what bleen said: "no compression! (this is going to be tough! compression is like air to me...)"

perhaps he's wondering himself but forgot the question mark after "compression"?

oh shit, ill go no fx, sounds like fun!!

no fx is proving fun...best of british with it

PAWEL: that cat is not NO FX...!

damn sounds good.

i've started to think it's a bit slow / plodding...what you reckon mister volcano? am considering trying the drums at double time...
