--> I recently watched this documentary on the making of sgt. pepper:

It was enjoyable... george martin spends much of the movie changing the volume on the 4 mixer channels to let us hear what's on each of the 4 tracks. Yeah, 4 damn tracks, that's it. We are so spoiled (?) with our massively multitrack recorders these days.

It got me to thinking how this track limitation was likely hugely influential in how that album ended up sounding...
which led me to thinking about mixit's, which are meant to create limitations on our production...
and then I thought, hey, that should be a future limitation, only 4 tracks allowed. (or 2 tracks? or 1?)...
and then thinking about mixits, I realized that we always have this limitation of using that set of samples, why is this the one constant limitation?

How about having some mixits that are still restrictive in some way, but allow us to bring in our own sounds? i.e. make a track on one single instrument, or record everything on tape, or with all the sounds in reverse, or live without edits, etc. etc.

Thoughts?

we can't restrict it to one specific piece of gear. other than that, good ideas. especially the four track thing. considering how easy bouncing tracks is in daws, maybe even just three tracks-so you can only mix two at a time to the other. i'd learn a lot from that

Yeah, bouncing... There's something about recording without an undo button. When you bounce on a tape, you can't un-bounce... makes you create music much differently.

i'm deffinitly a fan of the four track.

wait... who is in that bizzaro sgt. pepper outfit?!?!?

I'd go farther than this -- and say that music technology retail is based on a deceptive premise -- that somehow, if you get a certain piece of equipment/a certain amount of options, that some creative pathway in you will be unleashed.

yesssssss.....forced committment, i couldnt make music without it

we were, on mixit.panicnow.net, talking about using limitations for mixits. last month, only two samples. this month, no effects. etc. only using 4 tracks is a good idea two. some amazing thigns were done with mods, too, (amiga ones, the four track specials)... anywayz, great idea, u over at the mixit site? adcb????? oh well, anyway, wish there was a way to SET limitations on mixits, instead of the honour system :\ doesn't matter really

Lara, that's Paul McCartney. He's one of the beatles. He sings and plays bass.

actually, it's a picture of a costume from here: link
everamzah... I'm talking about a mixit without having to use the same batch of samples. It is a fun challange as is of course...
but would be nice to mix(it) it up sometime.

ah like a techxit. technique based mixit. sounds like a good idea.

George Martin is wonderful.

George Martin is my baby's daddy

about the movie: love it. friggin' fun. four tracks is cool in a way - helps me focus.
unfortunately one person playing all the parts means more than that for tracks to me.
about the mixit. i can't seem to make the hour available for the quixit and that blocks me totally.
i just can't see limiting to four tracks as a helper. we already have x amount of smaples to limit.??? idunno!
good movie!

crap its interesting. still watching the moobie

they cutup an old steam organ spliced it haphazardly. . . burrough's style. nice stuff...didn't know that. thanks for links!
