This strikes me as a good idea. I'm posting this here in case there's support from other (especially UK) folks who might not have already seen this.

(I'm aware that there are folks who'd rather not read about politics stuff here. I can sympathise, and i'll try to balance this kind of thing with primarily music related posts too)

Other Stuff

Numerology: who's using it? Itching to give this a try this week. Thoughts? reviews?

The butcher: maxmsp device link would it be possible to use this as a plugin somehow? (of would it need converting by someone who owns max msp into a different format?)

since that The Butcher is a standalone app it's not really easy to manipulate it even if you have a full max/msp license - there supposedly is a way to basically "pry" them open but it's definitely not in the intent of the author, otherwise they would've shared the source patches to begin with - i have a few standalone apps I'd love to tweak to my uses as well. once you have the source it could could possibly be made into a pluggo. talking out of my ass since i haven't actually used that particular patch..grabbing it now though!

I tried Numerology ages ago.. is the UB version out now? it's really nice, i mainly used it to trigger external synths, but i loved the sequencing possibilities (on first glance i didn't really like the way you chain together those racks and patterns into songs though, I'd probably just sample my simple creations).

ima sign up.
what good this would do......i dunno. probably not much good.....but ill sign up for the hell of it.
i think my MP is muslim.

i dont believe in politics either :P

@filarion: it seems the latest (or upcoming?) version of numerology uses rewire, i'm interested in using it 'in' live for modular duties. Thanks for the clarification about the butcher device.

@soft: hopefully some of the MPs will read it. Which might help directly in some small ways to help bring a little more balance to the situation in the UK regarding the current governments bias towards faith groups. The most significant 'good' that the action will, i hope, achieve is symbolic and 'consciousness raising'. A large part of this effect will be dependent on any media coverage that the pledge would receive if its successful. It can send a message that the views in the book are held by a significant number of people who feel strongly enough about it to take the trouble to participate - and therefore these views might be worth taking seriously/investigating. Cool to hear that you're signing up

what's an mp? lol

edit: oh is it member of parliment? they can't afford to buy a book on their own huh? how would u feel if someone went around pledging to give a bible, a qoran, or whatever to every mp huh? think about it

rest assured everamzah: i already thought about it.

okay, good... i can now rest assured

i love numerology's concept, not really sure about the UI. Have to dive into it more.

What is the objective of this book bombardment?
@tooth: it's a consciousness raising exercise and a message that the participants are worried by the promotion of (sometimes dangerous, potentially deadly) superstitious thinking. eg. blairs pledge to continue creating more faith schools. see also my reply to soft.

there is nothing deadly about superstitious thinking any more than there is anything deadly about so-called "objective" thinking. there are no evil thoughts. it's called free will, cbit, and everyone has it. if u don't like something, you don't have to participate in it (re: faith-based schools). perhaps u think that if everyone thought the way you did, everything would be pretty and perfect?

sam harris said: "In recent days, crowds of thousands have gathered throughout the Muslim world—burning European embassies, issuing threats, and even taking hostages—in protest over 12 cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad that were first published in a Danish newspaper last September. The problem is not merely that the cartoons were mildly derogatory. The furor primarily erupted over the fact that the Prophet had been depicted at all. Many Muslims consider any physical rendering of Muhammad to be an act of idolatry. And idolatry is punishable by death. Criticism of Muhammad or his teaching—which was also implicit in the cartoons—is considered blasphemy. As it turns out, blasphemy is also punishable by death. So pious Muslims have two reasons to “not accept less than a severing of the heads of those responsible,” as was recently elucidated by a preacher at the Al Omari mosque in Gaza."

Would you agree that the world would be a safer place (in however small a degree) if people hadn't been taught that it's ok to kill people if they disagree with the tennets of this particular book? (to pick one example)

ok ok, islam is a bit fucked, and muhammad is pretty much a tard, i'll grant you that. do remember, however, that the qoran teaches that "when you take one innocent man's life, it is as if you had killed all of humanity"... unfortunately they failed to interperet the fact that every life - man, woman, or child - is innocent, from life to death...

HOWEVER, it's kinda funny but.... books don't kill people, people kill people... LOL

sooooo i guess i would wrap that reply up with... it's important to shift our focus and no longer tolerate violence. shoving a book in someone's mouth (for the 512th fucking time) ain't gonna do the trick.

edit: i feel a need to add that i mean no offense by the above statement, or the one previous (though there's something so cute about caling muhammad a tard) i really don't know anything about it

butcher could be quite a chuckle in lloopp. need to post about lloopp actually, having a pain in the arse with it on my old laptop, no sound happening even after upgrading to asio4all and dx9. balls, may just sack it off until i get a new laptop

i would like to add my strong views on the subject of violence, especially violence in the name of god. i believe in peace. i believe peace is possible, and probable, and can exist. it seems to me that we, as a people, as a race, have tolerated violence and war for too long. we have believed it to be a natural, inherent part of our mass psyche. that we are naturally sinned, perhaps, or that we are doomed to kill each other. THIS IS SIMPLY NOT TRUE. if it takes a nation of athiests, at this point, to intrigue us into a peaceful world, than i am all for that. i will never be an athiest myself, nor will many others, because we are not satisfied with its terms and limitations.

but the violence has gone on for too long. we are a people of rising tensions, who are having problems expressing our aggresions and angers and feelings, and it is turning bloddy. plz, the most important thing u can do, is not buy a book for someone - it is to grant peace the validity u know it holds. the best thing you can do is believe in peace, and practice it in ur heart. to allow ur anger and agressions full creative vent, and to show by example that violence is in no way acceptable, or right. killing beyond the need for sustainance is always wrong. there can be no justification in one murder, nor a justification in many.

if you believe that war is justified, you are not granting peace its validity. if you believe that a muderer should be murdered, again, you are not granting peace its validity. you are continuing on in the fashion of violence. if one side drops its weapons, the other side will learn by its lesson, by its example. to turn the cheek is a proper proverb, here. and if this frustrates you than plz, understand it is you who is frustrated and are feeling this way, and to plz try to understand ur feelings. they shape our world.

plz believe in peace as i do. know in ur hearts that it exists now, and is ready as a canvas is ready to be painted upon. peace exists everywhere i look, and i want to share it with you. if a book is what is needed for you to attain peace, than so be it. however, let us from here on out be clear in what it is we desire.

we desire peace.
