||||Any Interest in a Toronto Laptop/Live Pa Monthly||||

As the title implies... I was PM'd the other day from a member from the Ableton board regarding gigs in Toronto... Unfortunatly the collective of which I belong to does not have room for other performers but I had been pondering the idea of starting a monthly somewhere.... Preferably lower east side in my hood Leslieville/South Riverdale/St.Lawrence...

I know here in Toronto and probably any other place it takes a bit of effort to schmooze your way into the local scene... Having an open night would give a free oppurtunity to other performers looking to hone and expose their chops...

I do have one place in mind that would probably be up for it on King St. near George Brown College... Another caveat is that in 2 months I will have to devote time to help my wife with the arrival of our new son... Having done this 17 yrs ago it does take up one's time so I would require help with this endeavour...

Any interested parties let me know...

brian.

Sweet! thx for the consideration of spamming!
big points from me.

hey brian. i had no idea you lived in the east end. we might be neighbors.

i thought livepa.org was anti-laptop.

anyway, congrats on the new arrival.

an east side laptop party sounds great, considering there are no regular laptop parties in toronto that i know of, at least.

more power to you brian. minisystem and i are practically neighbours, so you might be my neighbour too.

sons take up time. i barely wrote a note for the first year & a half of my son's life (same way when my daughter was born) & i'm only just now getting back into it.

i don't play live anymore, but please spam again when you've got some dates lined up. maybe we can have a good ol' fashioned em-meet again.

Hey Jeff congrats on your recent release... The livepa board has started to warm up to laptops there are quite few guys using them with hardware...Must be tired of hauling all that gear.... Good to see some interest in this monthly...

Hey yeah, I'd definitely come check this out if it happened.

a bunch of guys here gave something like this a whirl a few years ago: me, minisystem, prhizzm, nybbl, lem, kuma, stevec, setzer, and maybe a few others.

got a few gigs going that way but never found a venue ready to dedicate a regular night to it - i think that prolly what killed it in the end (that, and the fact that my live sets put folks into comas)

I'd def'ly check to it out. Please keep us outsiders (btw, stay gold pony boy) in the loop (as it were).

Good luck!

wazzat? a chance at a gig in taranah? love to, if i understood the post correctly...

What venue did you guys do this at? What was the turn out like? What kind of technical issues were you up against?

we tried a bunch of different venues. the back of oasis (now savanah room), clinton's, tequila lounge (now la hancienda), the upstairs at the el mocambo. all were a pain in the ass in one way or another - unrealistic bar guarantees, rental fees, unfriendly staff that didn't like the music, overzealous promoters that wanted to take creative control - we ran into pretty much everything.

that's why i like the sound of a low-key regular night. turnout was always a problem because the venue's expectation was that if you were taking it over exclusively for a special event that you'd pack it the rafters. a bar with a small back room that lets you do an event without disrupting the regular clientele would be ideal. actually, the back room of oasis was pretty good. its only problem was that you had to go out to the main bar to get a drink. the art bar at the gladstone is also pretty cool for stuff like that, although its the same problem with getting a drink.

artbar good...

I'm very interested.

...will post more later, I'm on my way out.

/mike

I'd check it out.
Although I have to admit most times when I go out in Toronto I end up feeling old around all the teenagers (nothing against the young'uns of course).
Ah well I'll bring a friend and concentrate on the music. haha sounds like I'm going to meditate or something.

Well, I've always been a fan of the Art Bar for events... Some friends of mine are having a show there this friday that everyone in Toronto should check out --- geeky/computer/arsty type thing:

Anyway, other than that I know a lot of the freetek guys have been using venues such as Ania's Cafe near queen and Bathurst, it's not the nicest place in the world but there is a bar and they don't mind the noise. The El Amigo at Queen and Dufferin has also been used a few times. Another smallish venue but again they have a bar and don't seem to mind the noise at all.

Nothing in the east end pops to mind at the moment, I live in the george brown/st laurence area and I can't for the life of me think of a place near that college that a nice jam could be held at... where were you thinking?

Ooo there is always the Blue Moon out by Queen and Broadview, they have a massive back room just past the pool tables... I'm not sure if they charge to use the space.
