--> Just leave a comment stating what you think 'art' is. That is all. I find this question interesting, but perhaps the question itself is invalid. Is art even a useful word to describe anything? Is even thinking about what art is and is not a useful enterprise? If there is no fixed and generally accepted definition of what art is, can there be a natural talent for it?

put simply, art is a distinctively human expression of ideas and emotions thru various artforms, like music, painting, poetry, and the like. . .

and yes, the discussion is a fine enterprise.

What is 'art'?
Baby, don't hurt me,
don't hurt me,
no more!

if i can do it, it ain't art... and i can do a lot.

i think electrodan's definition is good for 'art' in the broad sense.

in terms of the fine-art 'Art' subset its trickier. In this context a definition that seems to hold is that something is 'Art' if the author intended it to be, and if that reading is agreed with by art world/art market at large. It's almost circular, but not quite.

art used to be a talisman to protect hunters from their prey during the hunt. it gradually evolved into a display of ownership like: "look at my field and my wife". keeping pace with human civilization, it has fragmented and assimilated into the greater meaninglessness of what we call modern life.

creative expression - enabling an imprint of the artist's mind to occupy a space that was hitherto without human influenced design, form or sound.
the expression of ideas into physical form

it's a two-part process, imo.

part 1: intent... if you intend to create art, it is. if you intend to rip someone else off, you've only succeeded in duplicating another.

part 2: going beyond your tools. you must bring something more than just the application of your tools, be they music creation programs or instruments or brushes, etc.

i think the better question today might be "what is cool" or "what doesn't suck"

the point of whether something is or isn't art is irrelevant without taking things like coolness or suckitude into account.

ive always been into the idea of art as a talisman for psychic defence.
either what you've made and/or the process of making it helps prevent your consciousness being consumed by a universe which is oblivious to you.

yeah monty, you made me realize that there is at least one sane way remaining to look at art.
