congrats.
a "cheap" place downtown is either going to mean shared with others or a crap-hole, in my experience. I guess that's not far from UofT or Ryerson, so maybe you could get a room in a student house. I've found the best thing to do is walk around the neighborhood you want to live in. You might see signs for apartments that aren't in the classifieds, because they don't want to get ten million calls and five million visitors.
That said, it might be worth it for you to commute. I think the GO train is not too expensive, and is fairly quick. (but only marginally reliable if you've been watching the news).
Sorry, not a great help I guess.
Oh, and by the way, electronic music.

Thanks, I guess I'll have to go on some scouting missions during weekends. Someone I know already scouted that area for her own move back in august, so hopefully she'll have some good tips for me. From the feedback I've got from various places so far I think I might end up commuting.

Nice! I could swing 750 inclusive. That's what I wanted to hear. I'll hopefully get a chance to browse the area sometime soon and with some luck find a place I can afford. Thanks for the tip.
