--> Sounds sorta crazy to ask here... but here goes.....

I'm in the process of registering my music with Socan (the canadian BMI/ascap) and I wanted to set myself up as a publisher.... of course I've never done that before and I need to submit a contract (to myself for my music). Has anyone come across a decent example contract that they've used? Would you be willing to share it?

I know the first question is going to be, "Why not get a lawyer?"

But since it's a contract with myself, and in order to save some $$$ I was hoping to get a sample one and start from there. I know there are a couple of net labels on here,... so if anyone has an example one they're willing to share I could really use the help.

all contracts are specific to what your needs are personally do a search on these sites that supply contracts to spec or from a list of pre formated ones for a reasonable price... thats how I did mine

ah interesting! i just got accepted to socan too and am registering my songs......

i got accepted into my local version of bmi/ascap as well, and was poring through all the legalese on the differences between writers & publishers. I guess socan makes that distinction as well, but what are the benefits of being a publisher? Don't you have to pay for some kind of audit or some form of contractual obligations, which in this case, is yourself?

oh god... i still have to do this...

it should cost NOTHING... in fact really there is no need for the paper work just when registering the tracks you say that you are both auth and pub and youget 100 percent of the payout for the music.... its not all that complicated really....

does anyone know about what sorta effect registering with SOCAN has if your record is released by a foreign label?

depends on if SOCAN has a deal with foreign collection agencies. check out their website to see, i know mcps in uk has agreements worldwide so royalties find their way back to you.

i just adapt contracts i found on the internet depending on what the music is being used for.

socan tracks air play in canada it does not matter who you release with all socan cares about is that your a candian artist and that you get your money for airplay of that record.. they have agreements with other similar agencies in every country your record might get airplay in...
socan has a great 1800 number to call for free info they are super helpfull and will answer any and all questions regarding your music...

cool, thanks..
