as much as i love osx i have some real problems with apple stuff the last couple of weeks and months
first of all, i got this shiny macbookpro, which had the whine and heat issues in the first place, so i got my logicboard changed, just to realize, that now the fans are all blowing the whole time, so i got it changed a second time. after that the whine and the heat were back again. plus it had the strange thing, that quite often it thought i had a second monitor attached so it booted in 600x480 or 1920xwhatever
so i called apple support and after some discussion and bringing the mbp again to some retailer to check i got it replaced.
when, and for what kind of model – i don't know. they haven't told me yet.
then i installed itunes 7.1 on my g5. after that, the whole library was just a huge white rectangle. (wtf) so after deinstalling and reinstalling like 3 times and importing all my musicfiles back into the library (about 30 gb - i haven't taken quite a lot of cds with me, when i moved to munich) i finally got it to work.
this morning i wanted to put up some new tunes on my 3gen ipod.
but...
it's not recognized. apple suggests ressting, but this is not an option, as my ipod-hd is a little corrupt and it took my about 2 days, to get it to work again. so resetting it, would probabaly make it more or less die forever.
and i bought some new cds i wanted to hear on my way to work. fuck.

plus. i had some real problem reauthorizing software as some companies found it a bit suspicious, that i want to authorize their software for the 3 time again in 4 months with a new hardware.
but luckily we have iphone and appletv.
thanks.
and still. i'd prefer the os over any other.

they do seem to be going downhill. i had some probs with my macbook, which eventually led to them sending me a brand new one, which still has a couple of the problems. i feel that my powerbook was a much more solid and reliable machine, in comparison to the macbooks i've had. although, they do perform pretty well with music software and the likes.

It's not that new, I had soooooooooooo much trouble with my first ipod (gen1), I had them send me like 8 replacements before it went completely broken. Same thing with friends buying the first alu powerbooks, etc... I don't really know, it's definitely risky to buy apple first gen hardware, and then maybe a few other models? The OS i sgetitng nicer and nicer though (from a programming point too, that AudioUnit Documentation and Resources and Tools is so nice compared to the VST mess on windows).

they really seem to have become a victim of their own succes, I've been hearing all kinds of bad stories since they've switched to intel
had an iPod die on me too a couple of months back (hard drive issue) still need to get it fixed, it's gonna cost me a bunch
so happy with my iMac G5 still, was reluctant on getting an intel one, and i'm happy i did.
at least i could run the software that i wanted from day 1, which meant more to me than having a faster (more future-proof) processor.
I wonder how 'well' their rumoured ultraportable will be made, sounds interesting, but we'll have to wait for it to mature i suppose

i know, it's always risky, but when your old laptop dies....there's not that much of a choice. besides, i haven't played live the since may, so i could have lived without it.
let's see what the new model will bring, they promised to send me.

my rule with computer hardware of any gender is to wait for at least 2 years before you buy it. that way all the service packs will be ready (windoze) and the logic board issues (crapple) will be fixed.
i made the mistake of buying an ibook g3 when they were relatively new and had to get my MLB replaced, and my 2gen ipod was more than a little creaky. but that's nothing compared to the mountains of problems i've had with windows over the years. as bsr said, they both suck. microsoft and apple have both reached the "pantene pro-v" stage of their corporate lives - ie trying to convince consumers that they need machiines and OSs that can do cool things that are totally unnecessary.
dashboard=window dressing. don't need it. can i turn it off? well, you can, but it's a real pain to do it
windows services=wtf do they do anyway. can i turn them off? ye-es, but your computer will crash more.
i like OSX, and god forgive me i like windows too, for all its faults, microsoft is facing an uphill struggle trying to keep their precious code secret as much as possible and battling to keep the zillions of hardware devices out their running smoothly.
