--> I've got Flu or something almost as grim, so I've come home to chill for a bit and to get to grips with some new hardware.

I'm working with a stripped down studio consisting of only what I cannot be without.

1 x 12 Channel Mackie Onyx Mixer
1 x Yamaha QY700 Hardware Sequencer
1 x Access Virus B
1 x Roland V-Synth XT
1 x CME UF5
2 x Genelec 8020

I can't tell you how completely fucking weird it is not to be using a computer for sequencing and sample editing.
To start with it's MASSIVELY frustrating and you feel like you've lost an arm. Then I remembered exactly why I'm so into my hardware in the first place, it's the "dedicated box" thing, I can't just alt-tab to check emails or go looking for a new plugin on the net. It's amazing, it feels like I'm making bedroom-techno again.

can't wait to hear your output

you'll really get to know those machines and hopefully get the best out of them

That sure is one stripped down studio.

yeah i feel ya. i plugged in my midi cv box for the first time in ages and had
bedroom fun with the analogues last night. pressing one note and getting massive
sounds is fun fun fun.

any chance you could tell me something about how the qy700 works?

hopefully the musicmaking will speed up your recovery.. don't start enjoying it too much though or you'll end up extending that flu voluntarily -- right now i'm also working with a living room version of my setup and it's very fun - i just set up one external machine apart from laptop+monome and work with that on a track.. next track involves another one of the external sound sources and so on. (well, there's really only 3 or 4 to rotate through )

@bla: what did you want to know? it's basically just a sequencer, lots of functionality, and MIDI options, great if you like step-sequencing, great if you prefer 'playing', plenty of options if you want to go deep into it, but it looks like DOS and it wont help you if you rely on audio or VST's alot. I don't.

im asking about it cos i think i need a new sequencer- ive only got an alesis mmt8 (x2) and i think i could do with something different (i dont use this computer for music (not mine))
rm1x seems quite cool- you can edit stuff while its playing- something i cant do on my mmt8
qy700 is usually a bit more expensive (on ebay) than a rm1x and i was wondering what you get for the money
generally im all about step sequencing (i dont have a midi keyboard or drum pad)
is there anything especially cool about the qy700?

I've used an RM1x and hated it. This is different bag of bisto though.
The SOS article is worth a read, in which he says:

"...there is no doubt in my mind that the QY700 is the best hardware sequencer ever made."

hope this helps a bit, sorry i'm not a bit more specific, I'm shattered, going to bed.

cheers for the link!

i'm almost at the same point, the only difference is that i'm still trying to figure out the most versatile way to connect everything. i'm waiting for some more gear i've bought and i think i'll be needing a bigger mixer soon.
