sigh second time due to pic issues.
i went and saw them last night. i saw them about 2 years ago, and was blown away, so wanted to see if they could repeat the feat. and they succeeded. amazing. at first, they walked onstage and introduced salvador doran, turn out he is the guy who sang the operatic parts on the collab they did last year with iron & wine. he was great, classic mexicana styles with an amazing voice. he played a few songs, then the band came on and played a few with him, and then they proceeded to play A LOT of songs, including a whole shwack off my favourite album. link
trumpets, marimbas, accordians, slide guitar, stand up bass.....it's strange that i like them, i don't usually go for the tex-mex/alt-country/pop/folk thing, but they are just so good that i can't think of any reason not to enjoy it.

they play here tomorrow....i don't have tickets and i'm in the process of packing, so i might have to miss it 
but i saw them open for pavement a few years ago, before i knew who they were. such an amazing live show...totally upstaged the headliners that night. me and my friend were talking about them before the show started, and joked that they were probably a mariachi band or something...when they walked out on stage with their horn section and nylon string guitars, we almost shit ourselves.
oh, and if you buy their new album in vinyl, they give you free mp3s if the album too, plus bonus tracks. mad props for that.

Last time I saw Calexico was at the roskilde festival. They played at noon or so and the previous night 9 people had died when Pearl Jam played. Somehow they had a comforting effect on everybody I knew there, starting out acoustically, real mellow. After awhile they brought in the mariachi band and all hell broke loose. Probably the best gig I'll ever see.

Oh man, do I love that group..they are soo amazing...Big Sand is also really good too. I have seen Calexico once, back in Chicago...they were amazingly good. The whole band just had this perfect vibe and the crowd was eating it up.
Other suggestions..if you like that sound..check out "Friends of Dean Martin"..I think they had to change their name to "Friends of Dean Martinez" though for legal reasons. They are really excellent.

Friends of Dean Martinez is another Howe Gelb band, isn't it? I'll have to check them out, as I like all his other projects and related bands.

Oh man I am an idiot, I meant Giant Sand, not Big Sand..
airliner: i don't think that it is another Howe Gelb band, but he may have been a part of it at some point, as most of the Giant Sand members are in it Friends of DM as well. Alot of the dark country groups are my favorite, like Mazzy Star, etc. Glad that it never became too mainstream..and hopefully never become electronic..

when i saw them they played a lot of improvised jams that were downright wicked.
