--> being used by me as the world's most expensive (non-diamond-encrusted) 37-key midi controller. What a waste. Would you part with it? Colour me torn.

I'm not minisystem analog-dude (mean that in the best possible way), but me likes to bang out a Dr Who bassline or a churning sync lead now and again. Stock cheesecake shot attached.

Anybody else have stories of expensive gear that ended up not being used to its fullest (while you spent your time with less sexy gear, like a casiotone vl-1 ... ).

Well, why did you buy it? That is one hell of an expensive device for a MIDI controller, but -- wow! The things you can do with a Moog! Learn to use it!

(this coming from a guy who uses his Ensoniq ASR-10 as a MIDI controller now, when it was purchased as a $2500 sampling workstation back in '94 or so)

What's there not to use?

I don't really use my Evolver anymore (due to the haunted-ness talked about in other threads). It's a waste of my time, but I can't bare to part with it. I truly love it, and have hopes that one day I'll be mature enough to use it or DSI will come out with a crazy software revision to make it rock even harder. Until then it sits in the corner not hooked up. I only paid $350, so I guess it's not too bad.

i'm using the roland jp8000 as a midi controller (not as flash as the phatty i admit)
what's with this evolver backlash? still loving mine a lot (had it for about 3 months) and wouldn't want to part with it
so much fun to take it somewhere and jam with it for a couple of hours
too bad i can't get the vyzor editor to recognize my unit at all

My problem with the Evolver is it having way too many options to make it sound fubar, thus wasting my time in not making "real" focused sounds that I can control.

It's a really silly irrational problem (especially since I play around in Max and Bidule), but i feel like it's a different story when I define exactly the amount of sources craziness allowed in a patch. I think it has something to do with the Evolver's matrix editing too ( not that it's too much of a pain) but I spend an hour or so fing up a patch to the point where if I try to harness it back to making some sense I'm exausted, lost in the patch, and out of steam. DSI should just give out therapy vouchers with every sale

Two words: Moog.

Plus she's darn purdy and rattles the windows.

Kurzweil K2VX I paid $2700 for in 1996 has been a exclusively MIDI controller since 1998.

i've bought a couple of things and not used them. the worst offender is probably the ohmforce symptohm, which i have yet to use once in a track (the thing's such a cpu hog)

i bought a tx81z, a vz10m, and an evolver and never really used any of em (i used the evolver a little)

happily, me and the modular get along well, for the simple as well as the retarded.

Not quite the same, but I picked up an MPC 2kxl for about a grand and since can't be bothered to drop the measly $200 or so it would take to get it proprely connected to my computer for both midi and audio recording.

sell it to me for $500 and I will ease you pain

I had an OB-8 that I quickly sold for a monomachine .. which then sold for an SH-7.
I loved the OB-8.. but at the time I was in a low demand band that just needed casio-ish sounds .. not synth-pop stadium or ambience.

But my SH-7 is my prized piece, played it out live many times.. it's the source of my "unique" analog sounds. God I love that thing.

I know exactly what you guys mean I have picked up many peice of gear over the years to only end up selling them for half or less then I paid for it simply because I found myself never using it and decided that I could use the money for other more important things... these days Ive paired down to my laptop, a small mackie mixer, 2 knob and slider midi controllers one larger one for studio one smaller for live, one midi controller keyboard, a couple of soundcards one larger one for studio one smaller one for live shows..and belive it or not the 2 things that get the most milageout of my studio is a harmonica and a fender fatstrat oh and a pod xt... besides biddule and tassmann which I use to generate sounds with the harmonica and fender guitar have been come my main hardware tools to work with to generate sounds with.... oh and my other secret weapon of choice is an ebow...that tool along side the pod pumped into a biddule patch goes a long way... bass lines, leads, signwaves that all you really need in the end... its your DAW that lets you put the sounds together into what ever it is that your calling music these days...
so as much as I drool over ear like that moog in my experince I tend to always end up back at the tools that speak the most to me...
Ive never been 100 percent confortable using a keyboard to play music with... its nice to use lounge lizard from tiem to time but its also nice to try to make that same piano sound using a guitar with a filter and rensonator efx... its all about what works best for you... I mean hell I know folks still using reborth to make music with and its dam good!!!

i had an mc-303, and while i only paid $150 for it, that was a LOT of money for me in high school. shit, it's still a lot of money for me ;-) i used the crap out of it for like a year, even went so far as playing it as my only instrument in a very sort-lived band called 'boating for beginners' - then, nothing. i'd get it out maybe once a year to sample the one voice on it i still liked. last year, i sold it to a friend for cheap and i think he's happy with it! sometimes i miss it, but i know it was for the best.

i wish i knew now what i knew then. i went through so many synths, and wish i had many of them back. too bad they sell now for about twice as much as they are worth now and most of the things i regret selling i'll never be able to afford again

that being said, i ended up selling everything that i didn't use very much because i needed money. now i need synthesizers because the stuff that i saved that i thought i would use the most is not being used so much (or rather isn't very inspiring to my creative process). fuck you ebay, and fuck you stupid people who will pay $1000 for things that are worth $450.
