i got a yamaha qx3 big old school midi sequencer today
its huge
i havent used it yet
im a bit scared
its got a keyboard with some keys for letters but only a to g- what about the rest of the alphabet?
and theres keys with these weird symbols on them that look kind of like golf clubs, some with flags on the handle- ???
and f, ff , fff- how f's do you need?
its all a bit confusing
not like my trusty mmt8- thats all numbers like it should be
good thing= built in disk drive (3.5" too unlike the qx1 that has a 5 1/4" drive- glad i didnt get that)
bad thing= you have to use the disk drive- theres no internal memory

I tried a qx3. It was all hard-core menu diving on a 2-line LCD and granular control of MIDI data at a level way too deep for an 80s interface.
Not for me, but you're going to love it.

i think its beautiful (and scary)
after reading the manual it seems quite a bit different from the mmt8 (which is a great simple machine)
theres no pattern mode, only song mode but the song is divided into measures (bars i guess) and these can be looped if you set the loop points- they can be copied, shifted in time, quantised, have different data types extracted, ummm i dunno , a bunch more stuff- quite interesting- you have to set time signature, step length, gate time etc etc
it can do cool things like transpose 1 type of note - eg turn all a#'s into g's or something, it can compress/expand the dynamic range (velocities)
but it seems like you really have to plan what youre going to do- lots of disk work- you cant just switch on, do some editing, switch off, come back later, fuck with it some more etc in the same easy way you can with the mmt8- also im still going to use my mmt8 for live shows because of the size and weight difference

i am interested in hearing what you do with that beast, bla. i have always been a bit impressed with your technical prowess when it comes to machines like that.

Its daunting, I mean, sequencers onscreen give more feedback
I guess musicmaking has become a lot more visual in some10 years

i think i should collect loads of different sequencers and do some scientific techno sequencing tests using only the same sounds and see what effect they have on the music
