So I need to grab some monitors real quick-like and I need some advice.
link
What on this page looks any good in the sub-$400 range? (I know, I know, I should spend more, but I just don't have it right now, etc. etc.) I have nothing other than headphones and shitty $30 computer speakers, so anything is better than what I have, but I don't want to wind up with junk, of course. I'd love to buy the KRKs but I could only afford one.
I'd love to get great dealz on ebay and such, but I'm gonna need these on my desk for saturday. Are the MixCubes a good idea? Are any of the M-Audios any good?
Appreciate any help.

I've heard both the little tapco's and a friends set of the M-audio and have been able to compare mixes from the M-Audio to two different sets of Dynaudio speakers (both big ones and the little ones) and I like the M-audio better. Generally I hate M-audio due to really cheap build quality, but the mixes translate really well between the big Dynaudio and the M-audio.
That said, I went to a workshop on mastering and the guy, who mainly masters Elelctroacoustic music, said that he has a pair of some home theatre brand speaker worth $1200 (can) for the pair and he spent $30,000 on the room acoustic treatments. He also said alot of other things, but mainly it came down to knowing your room and where all the weird frequency issues are and getting rid of them with some baffles, bass traps, etc. You could get a wikkid set up with some research into how to treat your room and a fairly cheap pair of speakers. He maintains that a totally flat room is better than checking mixes on lots of various speaker systems, although I think there is something to be said for both approaches, especially if you're mixing music for clubs as opposed to radio/mp3/etc...
hope that helps

i thought my krks were only like $300 for the pair. yep the rockit 5s are like 150 each. thats sub $400.
they sounded a lot better than the m-audios and behringer truths to me when i a/b'd them. that is of course opinion and relative.
they sound SO MUCH better than any headphones, computer or stereo speakers i have used over the years.
like sometimes i just put music on to hear through them and sit back and enjoy it they sound so good.
and then you can always add the sub later. we have a sub rigged up using a very old peavey pa amp and some old old subwoofer.
do you have somewhere local you can get them from with a 30day money back guarantee? we have guitar center here so that always helps me decide to get something i really think i need. i can always keep the box and manuals and everything all nice then it back if it doesnt work out.

Shit yeah - maybe the KRK 5s are $370 CDN for the pair - although the Moog audio page there makes it sound like that's just for one. I'll call them when they're open.

I'd lean to the KRKs over the M-audio but wouldn't argue against either by any means.
I've never heard those mixcubes. They are cute, if anything.

perhaps not helpful to hear but I'd take expensive headphones over cheap monitors (and still have money left over for liquorice and wine).. but i guess you have some kind of emergency?

My life is a mixing emergency!
I have Grado headphones that I love love for music, but for mixing... they are deceptive. I work in a TV editing bay that has okay monitors, so I've been doing my shit at home on the headphones and then testing it at work, (and on shittier speakers elsewhere) and I usually find that things sound drastically different.
Anyway I'm doing a freelance music job right now and there won't be time to wait until the next day and test on the work speaks. I've been meaning to get some monitors, and since this job will (eventually) pay me (not much), I figure now's the time to get them.
Anyway, happy ending: the KRK 5s are indeed way cheaper than that page had me believe, $350 CDN for the pair. So I know what I'm getting. Thanks for the advice everyone!

i use them in one of the studios i work in; they sound like auratones but with better bottom end. great for checking mixes on.

File this mixing emergency case under: SOLVED.
Picked up my KRKs last night and I am thrilled. What a difference. You can really hear the mud! I'm going to play tons of other people's tracks on them tonight and tomorrow to get a good feel for how mixes should sound on them, and then get to work fixing up my junk and pissing off my neighbours.
Thanks again for all the suggestions yo.
