--> <-- Hello,

i am an extreme windows user, but i had some money at my hand and spent it on an iBook from ebay.

its specs are:

800MHz G3 PPC
256MB RAM
30GB HD
12" Display
and MAC OS X Jaguar
with english keyboard layout
it came with NOTHING but the iBook, power adapter and software on hd

and ahhh it's WAY more quiet than the laptop with windowas i am using (best feature yet)

It is fun to buy used computers, because there is always some stuff left, in this case A LOT of pictures and dorky videos, saved passwords for gmail accounts (!) and various software. no pron though

i spent quite a while fiddling around with the OS, but i still have near to no idea how to deal with the apple at all. BUT i am learning fast.

so i hope you welcome me as a new apple mac user and give me some tips:

will it run os x tiger properly?
what about audio? can i have som fun with ableton live on this system?
best free synths (links please)? what format are they anyway? vst? what is AU and will i be able to use it?

prev. owner said there are some widgets that change all the icons (really shitty looking icons) so how can i change the icons back to the default ones?

so, i am not "installing" apps (like windows), i am "mounting" a *.dmg file - and then?
how do i "uninstall" correctly?

where can i get a small german schuko plug for the little white power adapter?

where can i find neat (free) applications for everything that i got to HAVE on the iBook?

please give some general tips for using this ppc and os?

it'S not a uber fast laptop that's for sure.
bnut you will be able to run some cool software on it
like soundhack, or the stuff from akira rabelais.

one thing you may think about getting is quicksilver
link

get onyx for regular maintainance stuff
link (scroll down for the pre tiger version)

you should be able to run tiger (but i have no clue how fast it will be

un/installing apps is really simple.

install: mount dmg -> drag app into the application folder -> done
uninstall: delete app from application folder -> make search on the app to find the plist-file to it. maybe there some stuff in the application support folders aswell. -> done

buy the plug you need at conrad.

emmail me, if you have any questions

and welcome to the world of mac

it's the same piss in another bottle.
besides: the OS fucking rocks

and yes pics or stfu

Should run reason 3 no prob. My G4 667 powerbook does and DigiPerformer4.5 (not at the same time though or it goes on fire).

hey same specs as the lappie on my desk right now. mine runs tiger ok - but not g-r-r-r-reat (sorry - kellogs frosties joke)

go and download the demo of numerology right now!
link
best sequencer ever, and only on mac. it also integrates seamlessly with ableton by creating its own software midiport

i run ableton live 4 on my mac as well - no probs - gigged with it zillions of times - never crashed.
current vst synths i'm running - particlefountain, mda piano, mda epiano, mda dx10, dmihammer, dmiflute, crazy diamonds

and the AU synths
cheezemachine, chip32, daHornet, tickyclav, greenoak crystal.

usually after"mounting" a dmg you can just drag it to the trash can. the trash will momentarily become an eject icon. or you can just select the dmg and press apple E. to unistall an app altogether, just locate the program in your applications folder and drag it to trash.

enjoy the world of Fucintosh!

congrats. iBooks are great and the G3s have a nicer feel than the G4s, real quiet and run cool as well. It'll run 10.4 quite happily, but you'd do well to bung an extra RAM stick in there (OS X loves RAM). (i'm guessing a G3 iBook can only take 512Mb though)Forget Live 5 or 6, but an older Live like 4 will be OK. A tracker would be the go for an old G3 iBook, renoise may even work OK in a pretty basic kinda way, or else milkytracker.
definately get Quicksilver!

watch out for the screen. my gf got one of those from a friend and the screen went wonky. turns out it was a common problem. odd solution for it too: open up the case and put a wedge of something (like a small stack of business cards) between the graphics chip and the case. turns out there was a batch that weren't soldered to the board well.

and if you've got friends that have panther and want to install it on your computer, you can turn your laptop on in hardrive mode by holding down the 't' key while you turn it on. then you can connect it to another mac via firewire and install the os on it that way. we had to do that because our g3 only had a cd drive and the panther discs were dvd's

Ah, yes, jarvis, the logic board issue.

If you do have it, Apple may *have* to repair your iBook if it's in a serial range - class action lawsuit makes them. Just search on "iBook logic board failure" and you can find out if you're eligible.

Anyway, enjoy tylth!

I love quicksilver - so much that I hate the Dock now.

I had the logic board problem on my ibook, apple sent a box the next day(tuesday) , they came and picked it up on wed. i got it back as good as new on friday. all for free.

does that replacement thing work even if you aren't the original owner?
Recent blogs: Non-standard midi keyboard, janko

yes, I had just bought the thing off of ebay myself....er interesting side note.
Not all of the ibooks in the serial range are defective or if they are not all of them crap out, mine in fact didn't.
Mine well, I was foolish and tried to put an airport extreme card in the airport slot without reading the instructions. It fried my ram on my logic board.
so when I would boot up I would get a flashing sleep light plus four beeps. The symptoms of the logic board defect are a flashing sleep light with three beeps.
So, I just called apple and played dumb. told them that it was in the serial range (which it was) and it was "flashing and beeping" during startup and would not boot.
they fixed it for me even though it was my fault, although the ibook could have crapped out down the line.
honestly though my biggest problem with ibooks are the batteries and the power adapters.
the adapters are especially shitty. get a macally one the are 10 times better.

mucho grats on the switch! like yghartsyrt said it's not top of the line but it's still a nice computer. I like those old ibooks.

For me each day for months I was amazed at what the mac did for me. I would learn something new literally every day. I always had macs around and even worked with them extensively for 6 months or longer at this one web gig. But once I owned one, everything started making sense again in computer land. Just get used to plopping $15 here and there for amazing software made for mac that does one simple thing and does it very well.

Here's my del.icio.us link tagged with mac. Some won't pertain to you but a lot of "10 osx apps you must have!" kinda things

good infos so far guys

-screen issue i don't got, runs good although (or maybe because the computer is ca. 3 years old) it's origins seem to be in an english school in yokohama, japan. was sold to me from a german seller who works and spends most of his time in england (hence th e english keyboard layout i reckon) but the puil was from denmark, got to track him down sometimes, get in touch. so far the little box is running like carl lewis : D

-yghartsürt, dope apps! i will check them out for sure. thanks for enlighten me on that dmg issue. the bloc pics are teh original from the ebay auction, want more or what? screenshots?

-zombie, sorry i'm not into reason (my sounds are coming from the )

- so then i'll check into numerology, maybe i can get a copy of lableton ive 4 somewhere (with version six available, 4 can't be more expensive then an onion i guess, even if it's a golden onion)

-more ram. yeah!

can someone help with the "widgets", rather with the icon issue. it's merely a visual problem, but damn i'm a esthete and i cn'T stand having a "doctor smiley" for firefox and stupid tribal icons and such
