--> summer is coming, and surely every man's thoughts turn to building a soundsystem. here in tokyo, where space is a premium, concrete is everywhere and the only noise that is acceptable in a public place is anything but dirty beats, we've decided to opt for an alternative approach: low-power/hi-fidelity(ish).

this means the whole system must be man-portable, on a train - cars are out of the question. it's got to be easy to setup and breakdown, for the times when the cops swing by and ask you what the hell you're doing outside a pachinko parlour with all that equipment, and above all, it's got to sound g-e-w-d. i've been to so many outdoor parties where the cheapo JBLs were banging so hard the whole rig must have been in the red the whole time, and the actual sound was just a distorted mess)

so, to this end, we've snagged the following components. a pair of B&W CDM-1s for the main speakers, a classic 1979 sansui amp, the AU-7700, an inexpensive Denon amp to use when the Sansui eventually dies, keyboard X-stands to put everything on and the cables and shit. snd our faithful generator - the humdinger.

so, this brings me to my question: we're going to build a subwoofer, probably 12" cone, about 100W. I've found lots of websites with great DIY info on cabinet construction and size calculation. what i'd really like is a recommendation on a crossover unit. i need something that's cheap (around $100), has line level ins and outs (i'm thinking of driving the sub from a second-hand kenwood mono car amp). it should also be light and smallish. a 1U rack is okay, but anything bigger will be too bulky to strap on the back of my pocket monster.

thanks in advance for any help

ivan
