so i just got offered a job as a work-from-home technical writer, it's a job that i would be more than happy to do, but i am still unsure that the guy is legit.
i mean, it seems legit on the face of it, but is there any way that I can know for sure?
he says he's leaving his current job and starting his own firm, so there's no information about his company available. The best thing i guess would be a contract between myself and him i guess....
i've been able to locate his address...
i mean, the worst he could do would be not pay me, but i kinda need the money at this point....
i'm actually not that worried but i'd like to be sure.

Try to get paid half up front, half afterwards or something similar, so it's a mutual trust thing. hope it goes well

yeah.. that sounds good. get a "signing bonus" when you start or don't give him anything until he pays you. you don't want to start off in a bad place though. if the guy is for real then you might just piss him off and make him not want to work w/you. not everyone is a thief.
i have a friend who does technical writing from home. seems to do Ok w/it.

nice use of logical operators, though I would've put parentheses around work at home.

Tech writing is a product based job... so it's totally ligit as a work at home job. I wouldn't worry about it, produce a technical writing product and see if you get paid... make it good so they know your worth it and you should be fine.
It may be a little pushy to ask for a signing bonus before you produce anything.
edit: interesting, I'm the only one saying "trust him". Am I the only Canadian giving advice here too?

do you have the Citizen's Advice Bureau in the US? In the UK they'll often put you in touch with a reasonably priced attorney who specializes in small-scale contract work. Are you in a union at all? There must be a freelancer's union for technical writers. probably worth joining it now.
Failing that, you could arrange a face-to-face meeting with him on the grounds that it's the first time for you both.
playing nonchalantly with a butterfly knife might help get your point across too

Be honest; explain that you are concerned that work at home jobs are sometimes scams. Ask him who he worked for before he decided to set up his own business. Do a bit of research on that company or ring them and ask for a reference. If he is legit, he will be happy that you show intelligence and are not afraid to use your own initiative to solve a problem. If he's a scam, he'll have some excuse why you can't contact that company, and if he starts with that shit, just say you are not interested and hang up.
If his own startup business is not traceable he's probably not above board for tax reasons, which doesn't mean you wont get paid. But if it's entirely legit, you should be able to find information on his own company if you search around. There are services that'll provide information on companies, perhaps for a fee.

well i found a former employer who confirms that's he's a patent attorney, as he claims, so at the very least he's not completely full of shit. I'm glad, this makes me feel confident about the stuffs.
thanks for y'all's input.

i dont know how that really works, but my sister was in a similar situation. she worked for a dude at a company, the guy quit and asked her to work for him at home (her home of course) while he worked at his place until he got a proper office. i think they would meet once or twice a week to touch base on things... very Jerry McGuire. i think she was even getting benefits!!
