--> I'm not a violent man, but I just want to slap everyone I ever see wearing a Confederate flag because they think it's a real rock'n'roll thing to do. It's not cool, it doesn't mean you're an anti-authoritarian, and it sure as shit ain't rock'n'roll.*

What you really tell the world when you wear this icon is that you think slavery is such a good idea you're willing to go to war over it, and if some damn Yankee wants to take your slaves away they'll have to pry them from your cold, dead fingers.

On a lighter note, I'm happy to report that the South Postpones Rising Again For Yet Another Year. Hallelujah!

* Early rock and roll owes a great debt to the contributions of black musicians who would not have had the right to form bands of any type if the Confederacy had had its way. What a musically depressed world we would live in if that had been the case, some dreadful hybrid of Wagner & Lynyrd Skynyrd I imagine.

i wasn't gonna go there. i thought about putting in a line like that, but i couldn't do it delicately enough. thx 4 coming through on that, because it's totally the next logical step -> future rednecks saying "hell ya, i'm a rebel - check out my swastika!"

<hands on hips, gay accent>haaaaatte!!!!!</>

The bottom line is that you can go to Alabama and see black women with Confederate flags in their hair. You're presenting a typical white liberal straw man here.

i'm just saying it's time we called it what it is - too long have people let it be a symbol for what it isn't, and if those black women in alabama knew what the real message was, they'd probably stop wearing them

i might be ashamed to be white, but i've gotta be white i'd rather be white liberal than white conservative (or white redneck - no offense intended - i just fail to see how it can be something to be proud of)
the south gets a really bad rap, but there's good people everywhere. history remembers the war being fought over slavery, but the bigger issue was the rights of the state vs. the rights of the fed. unfortuneatly, the whole things been wrapped up with slavery. there are bumber stickers sold in florida that say "i'll give up the flag, when you give up martin luther king day" and "if we get 4 more, we'll get the whole week off". i see it a couple times a week. it's so sad to see black children reading that sticker and wondering how the parents explain it to them.

stupid moron punks tried to make the swastika a punk rock emblem and a sign of their utter disregard for the moral majority. Luckily they didn't succeed, in great part I think to Sharpies and folks like the Dead Kennedy's saying "no fucking way".

best thing about the human race - there's decent people everywhere - there's so much riding on them, though

its not like the North issued the emancipation Proclimation before it was losing the war so badly that it had to find a new source of cheap soldiers.

Still, there's still a very Pro-Slavery vibe surrounding the confederate flag no matter how complicit the North was in promoting slavery (it sure wasn't the Southerners who got rich off the slave trade). The bottom line was, sure, the issue of States Rights versus Federal Rights was important, but the "states rights" in question was really just one right: defending the right to own slaves.

once upon a time i had a lit professor who told us that if blacks had been as productive in factories (big in the north) as they were on plantations (big in the south), they would have found another excuse to go to war... but then again, she was a yankee :P

I aggree wholeheartidly 11t1

I cringe everytime I see one on the bumper of the giant trucks with mud tires in front of me. I assume the people are racist as not caring about how it offends other nationalities denotes a lack of respect for other nationalities which is still racism.

"preserving my heritage" is crass as the heritage you're preserving stripped millions of people of there own lineage.

The states rights argument is crap, too. get a t-shirt that says states rights not one with a symbol so closely tied to slavery.

bottom line the only time I think one should wear a confederate flag is if you are involved in a civil war reenactment.

reminds me of that moment in the ali g show, when Borat goes to the wine tasting society in the deep south...

(after a black man pours wine for everyone & exits the room)
Borat: So, he is your slave.
Southern Gentleman: No, we don't have slavery in this country anymore.
Borat: That's good.
Southern Gentleman: It's very good... for them.

really shows you the racism hidden by a very thin layer of civility that's more likely the rule than the exception
