Mac's... or PC's..
Now, why am I bringing this subject up?
Because in the near future, I'm planning on purchasing a Macbook Pro. For School, regular web browsing, web site and Flash design, slight travel, and heavy music/recording work. So as you guessed it, I will be doing, "Heavy Work" on it.
Now, one of the reasons I'm considering the Macbook, is because its ability to run Windows. It's the best of both worlds right? I have exclusive Windows only software that I could perhaps die without (FLStudio), so this is a huge plus. I also want to try out the Mac OS X for a while, and purchase Logic Pro for when I need to record a group of some sort.
But what about my USB devices? Will my USB/Midi Keyboard work on Windows via BootCamp? (I know its designed to work on both Macs/PC's but I dont know about Windows.. ON a Mac) And what about ASIO, and devices such as Firewire interfaces (Multi-track Recording)
So I'm asking you, Em411... the community, to respond with some answers that will make my Macbook Purchase fantastic. (of course, the purchase wont be coming for a while, I still have a more cash to raise up, I'll probably get one around the time Leopard comes out and the Led lighted LCD screens)
So, im asking you EM411.. Is Mac the way to go?
(By the way, i hate Vista... and im no fan of XP but it gets the job done. I do happen to have an XP installation with SP2, so im clear for DualBooting)

i know several folks in the music/film/tv biz that are lagging switching to the mac intel dual boot machines because of some heinous problems with software. the offending programs mentioned-logic, protools, gigastudio, final cut. seems like a bit of a disaster, really.
of course this is all anecdotal.

1) there are many pcs
2) mac is one pc (personal computer)
3) there are better pcs out there than mac makes, and there are worse ones.
the real question is osx vs xp vs vista vs linux.
for audio stuff, osx is strongest followed by xp, then vista/linux. vista should get better soon.
of course, you pay more for equal performance if you buy mac.
to balance that out, they are shinier than or at least as shiny as 90% of the pcs out there.

Anecdotally i've heard that XP isn't that hot on a mac. Personally i'd go with a PC, but that's just me.

Yeah man. If you can't live without FL Studio, your better off going with a pc. No need in spending $1000-2000 in hope that the mac will run the software you need. I'd go with the sure bet (and I myself want a mac) i.e. good ole pc running microshaft windoze xp.

I use a mac and can vouch for serious Logic problems recently, although generally it works well, it's just dealing with files created with older versions of Logic that are having problems. Also I can tell you that FCP has no serious problems at all. Can't tell you nuttin about giga or protools.
Both camps are shite. I tend to feel that Apple has more at stake with their performance, so will be on it more... but who knows.
I disagree about what somebody above wrote that you pay more for equal performance... if you compare equal specs I believe the mac is same price or actually at times a little bit cheaper.
Yeah, I use a mac. But I live with a pc right next to me and went for a period using it quite regularly. Very very similar. I just don't like Windows.

Can't say anything sensible about the hardware (except the cosmetics, and i prefer the mac casings in general) but i far prefer OSX over winXP.
If you're doing web work on a mac it means you get to use Textmate, which is excellent (best code editor i've used) and getting a Ruby on Rails environment up and running (with subversion) on OSX is much easier than on XP, if that's your thing.

i agree with eyesnine.
Also, I'd say pick one. Dual booting? Do you really need to do everything? Like, are you a professional who needs to quickly collaborate with Mac and PC users? Or are you just afraid you'll be missing out on something cool?
Pick one! Learn it well! Thats better than knowing both poorly. Pick a software tool, maybe two, and learn them. Knowing Fruity Loops well is much better than knowing Logic, Live, SOundhack and Bidule just a little.
You will be missing out on stuff. Thats OK. Most of it isn't life-threatening, just a different flavor. There's also a ton of overlap, and unless you need that overlap, why try to learn it all? Spend that time doing music, not learning redundant software.
Unless your goal is to become the expert Forum Geek who wins all the "which is better, Macs or PCs? Fruity or Reason? Logic or Live? ProTools or NoobDrools?" arguments ;)

sometimes I still use my Windows 98 celeron 466mhz desktop and it runs Reaktor, Cubase, Soundforge, and Samplitude just fine.
it hasn't had a cover over its guts in years and there is cat hair on the motherboard and soundcard and all.

If you really can't live without Floops, get a pc. Especially if you're only thinking about Logic for "when I need to record a group." Is that an event looming on the horizon? I agree with mlbot, knowing one tool well is infinitely better than knowing many poorly.
I don't really think it's a "best of both worlds" situation either. Most audio software worth using is available for both and if something's not available, there is usually a substitute. Usually, I don't think one has to choose. There are many multitrack recording programs.
That being said, I think you should go in the direction you want. If you really want a mac, go for it.

electrodan's got it, all the cool people use macs so that's what you have to get, I mean do you ever see a cool hipster sitting at a coffee shop with a thinkpad at their finger tips? hells no!
Seriously, what mlbot said. Basically, whatever, just pick one and you can make the best of it.

PS: PCs are actually cooler at the moment just by virtue of the fact that no hipster would be caught dead with one.
