Damn.
I'm so close to finishing my second album. I burnt a copy of a close to finished 12 track album, and realize I have a few minor things to fix, and 2 tracks which I need to redo completely. Up to this point I made very good progress, but as always, it's the last tiny bit where the inspiration vanishes.
I tried 2 completely new versions of one of the remaining tracks, and they're crap, and now I have no interest in continuing.
Does this happen to everyone, in the final stages? Any tips to pull me through?

DROP AND GIVE ME TWENTY!!!
but seriously - i'm with tonearm. i too have been "finishing" an album for a long time. just remember that you will finish it at some point, and when you do, it's going to be great. if you put pressure on yourself, it'll never get done. the best of luck!

I'm so fugging lazy that I never even get to those stages. I don't get past the first day of working on a track usually. The 2 times that I did there were 2 year intervals between the times I worked on it.
Best of luck to you and I hope to be stuck in that stage someday instead of the "oh this sounds good enough, let's wrap this up before I get bored with it" that seems to be my limit at the moment.

I love your work, too. Keep on truckin through this part.
There is NOTHING less inspiring than fixing errors or problems- thats why I never do it.
Every song I make happens in one or two sittings of explosive creativity, and I get the whole song at once in my head. When I have these days, I work on the song for about 3-10 hours. Every other 300 days a year I sit down, touch the keyboard and go pinka pinka pink and throw my hands up and declare that today is not the day.
This is why we should both be working with other people!

just forget about it for a few days or a week or whatever and come back to it fresh or get osmeone you know who listens critically and play the "problem" tracks for that person and see what fresh ears have to say.
I was just talking about this kind of thing w/a friend the other day. he had some tracks on his computer that he did a long time ago and was never happy with though they were finished. he played them for a friend and his friend was freaked out and thought they were awesome and couldn't understand why he had just let them sit.
i have definitely gotten to a place where i've heard a track too many times and just don't know if its any good anymore. i usually put those away and wait until i want to hear it before i resume working on it.... or i save it as a different version.. go back to the one thing that i originally liked the most and work with that part again and see what happens.
looking forward to hearing your new stuff. i'm sure it's dope.

this is the nobody-in-their-right-mind-approved J-chot method for getting through stuff like this:
1.make sure you don't have to do anything important the next day
----when you're done with this, you will be burnt out.
2. eat a big carby meal.
---for reason why, press on...
3. take some speed.
----this can be in the form of energy drinks (b12 and b6, FAR superior to caffeine, works way longer) aderol or ritalin. I'd stay away from anything harsher.
4. before the speed kicks in, get your adrenaline going.
------just jog around a little, or dance around or skateboard a little, nothing more than 10 min, but make the 10 min count.
5. GIT ER DONE!!!!!
------step 5 of course being the most essential.

I should say step 2 should be done 2 hrs prior to the quick sucession of steps 3-5, the duration of 5 being the longest

Was wondering with a couple of friends lately when your second album would be out.
Can't wait to hear it!!
You'll be fine, all of a sudden it'll come together nicely (sometimes when you least expect it).

I'd say just forget about it for a fortnight. work on some new stuff. get your brain going again, get your ear in.
my girlfriend is my best critic. she doesn't hear most of what comes out of my headphones till it's finished so it's fresh to her when it's crispy and dried out to me.
I'm lucky in that i can trust her judgement totally. Over the past 5 yrs we've grown to have almost identical tastes in music. I like techno a bit more, she likes krautrock a bit more. other than that we're the same person.
It's a bit like having a twin, locking them in a cupboard for a year and feeding them through a straw, then letting them out and playing "three blind mice" on the recorder to them over and over and over again. they'd fucking love it.
