any help would be appreciated.
I've got a show on Saturday, and the new laptop is giving me oh so very much greif.
first off, it came with vista, which presonus has not written firebox drivers for yet. so i tried the XP drivers, and they kind of worked, but the audio drops out and pops a lot.. yea so i was like 'FUK, guess i'll have to install a warez XP'
yea so i did that.. and installed the firebox drivers and all.. and it turns out that the shitty shitty 'gold plated' bull shit 49 dollar raido shake firewire cable i bought was bad.. so i return that, and get one from office max for 30 bucks (jeeez).
now the firebox works ok most of the time, but then it'll just start dropping out like crazy. so yea..
then i read that there's some fucking update for the IE1394 drivers on XP that might help, but i can't download it cause XP aint' genuine.. cause they had to put vista (which i didn't want) on the fuggin computer.
soo i guess now that i know the cable is good, i'll have to reinstall vista and see if it was the ie1394 driver fucking it up.
but really it's probably just a bad firewire card on the lappy.
fuk fuk uf ukfd fkdufkufkdf sdf'asdsaflkadshg;lsnaf;b,lnaxv ..
spent all day yesterday fucking with this shit, when i realy should've been practicing shit for the show.
looks like i'll be hauling my desktop again.

no, 30bux is about right.
FW cables aren't cheep, and cheep ones are cheep for a reason.
sucks..
in pure speculation, im sure that fw patch can be found on the internet

It's very possible it's the fw card. When I had one I went through about 3 to get it working solidly. From what I remember they recomend one with a Texas Instruments chipset.
Another possibility is shared irqs, which I currently have hell with right now (my Ultralite is sharing one with my network card and about every 8 times I go online I get all sorts of wack pops, clicks, and distortion). In XP Right click on My Computer, hit manage, device manager, view resources by connection to see all the irqs.
edit: I have no clue about Vista ish though.

do you have any other firewire devices connected on lappy? usually that doesn't work very well. also, i have something like link and it works fine on my dell latitude 100L, so if your pc has a CardBus maybe you can try one.

yeah, the 1394 update for XP is only for FW800, you don't need it.
Like other folks said, it's likely your fw card, if it's not a TI chipset, get one that is.

it must be the firewire card.
so now i get to spend many hours on the phone with Dell tech support convincing them that it is.
ya.. i would never buy dell, but my sted-dad gets a discount on em. BLAST

some laptops dropout when the wlan adapter is switched on and doesn't find an access point.

Try doing all the audio XP tuning tips: link
May lead you to your problem.
I was having crazy drop outs for a long time and I found it was a setting on my hard drive.

yeah, there are a lot of potential causes of laptop dropout. have you tried monitoring your system performance to see if there are any cpu spikes/memory leaks/hard drive overuse? i use a firewire network, not an audio interface, just for files. i've got xp sp2, probably a very similar version to yours. i know that the firewire network detection is slow. it takes about 5-10 minutes after booting up for the network to become available. after that its fine though.
have you attempted cursing loudly at the laptop? making idle threats? or how about sending derogatory emails to bill gates? i find these are my best fall back options.

Is it a dual-core processor laptop? If so, there are some patches the OS needs to deal with the two processor cores, whether you have an Intel or AMD -- I had lots of skipping issues on high-math items like VSTs... until I applied the patch for dual-core. If you Google "dual core performance patch" -- you should find links from either type of processor manufacturer to correct some timing issues.

Is it a dell? Cause I heard dell would sell you an XP machine still. They'd prolly exchange it for you. maybe.
I just went through the same sequence of events as you. I bought a Toshiba with Vista, warez'd a copy of XP, and have been dealing with the shenanegans of it ever since. I have a USB audio card (lexicon omega). One thing I had to do was to go and find XP versions of all the drivers for my lappy's hardware. (like the mouse, wireless card, etc.)
I had a show last night and had almost no glitches. I had the latency really low, though, and had four inputs active when I only needed two. So I think I'm in the clear. Fingers crossed.
Radio Shack are fuckers. Prices on parts double every year.
