jef - i mean are you planning to use it to send midi patterns and stuff to other gear or into a computer.... or do you plan on using the rm1x exclusivley.
the sounds (especially the synth patches) on the rm1x suck!! really really weak. and the sound itself is thin and generally not good.
a bit of eq helps but it only has a stereo out .... so at best you can pan stuff left/right and have 2 mono outs and effect/eq them seperately.
the bad thing about that is - if you use the internal effects (which you really will do, cos the sounds are weak!) they get sent out in stereo.
so if you had drums panned left with distortion on them and a synth panned right with reverb, the dry signal would come out the left/right output respectively but the distortion/reverb would come out of both left and right outputs.
saying that though....depending on what expectations you have and what you want your tunes to do....it is workable!!! some drum sounds are pretty good and with some distortion and eq can sound decent and nicely dirty. i tend make dirty/slighty glitch techno with mine.
the midi effects are pretty good too .... good for messing timing up.
the sequencer is good!! very good for live stuff. you can save midi patterns from your computer onto a floppy and load those into the rm1x then send them into your computer to trigger whatever. each track has a mute and each 'song' you do can have 16 sections of varying length. actually sequencing on the rm1x is time comsuming but it gets easier. you can do x0x (grid) style, step, overdub, replace, realtime etc.
there seem to be some very strange bugs in the OS though. like you only seem to be able to change the pattern length of a sequence BEFORE you start programming your beats in. if you punch in a 2 bar drum pattern and decide it needs to be 4 bars instead ... change the pattern length and when you change screen/menu the pattern lenght will jump back to 2 bars. sometimes you punch in some notes in record mode .... exit back to main track view and it plays back the wrong note. its asif you just transposed the pattern up a few notes .... you go back to record mode and it sounds how it should ... exit back out and it sounds transposed up again. ive checked all the transpose settings and everything is how it should be. it doesnt do this for all tracks though and not all the time. very weird. there are a few other little things like that, that just make no sense at all!!! it gets annoying.
this is the setup i was using the other day whilst my computer was having a HD replaced.....
rm1x - about 10 tracks of mostly drums - turn the decay/gate time right down on some so they are clicks, distort some etc etc.
some 909 hats, snares, noises and stuff on the rest. and a bass line.
percussion panned left. bass and blips panned right. one track on rm1x was just a midi note on every beat being sent out to su10 on which i sampled a fat 909 kick. both rm1x left, right and su10 were then going into O3D and those channels were eq'd and compressed - with the su10 kick sidechained against the bass and percussion to give that throbbing techno feel. a bit of distortion/delay here and there.
i was quite happy with how this sounded.
....but without the kick coming from the su10 and the 3 outs being sidechained compressed effected and eq on the desk .... it sounded like ARSE!!!
was gonna put some nord or tx81z in there too but my midi leads werent long enough to reach.
so i wouldnt recomment it do make a full tune on ..... but used with other equipment or for sending midi into your computer ... and as a sequencer its pretty damn good!!

haha, that was alot.
i dont mind the rm1x sounds, they're pretty good in with a mix of other shit. they really aren't meant for whole sound creation, unless you make cheesey music.
although, i made a pretty sweet industrial song with it and a good sounding hip hop song. for dance music i can see it being pretty weak, i think you just need to edit the presets to get a decent sound.

woaaaaaaaaah! rad. thank you for the insight! i was planning on using it as a sequencer, as well as maybe for beats and just jamming w/ some friends. it's my first piece of hardware so i wanted something that was somewhat versitile and useable. i read everywhere that the preset synth sounds were crap, but otherwise it works pretty well. i'm looking for something to twist knobs on for live fun.
