i have been artistically stagnant for a few months now. no illustration ideas, and especially no music ideas (musically stagnant for over a year or two actually). i would call it creatively constipated. but then, this afternoon while sitting in my office of all places, i have a series of ideas for the motherload of creative projects. it was what i call a brain dump. one idea after another started popping out of my head. it felt great. why does my brain work like that? no ideas for months and then BOOM, a whole mammoth project takes shape in the span of about 10 minutes of brainstorming, i mean braindumping.
it is a gigantic project, for me at least. i'm starting with a (A) NARRATIVE BACKSTORY. i'll just give a clue and say it's set in the near future, has to do with the environment and scientists, experiments gone wrong, and ancient alien forces. no, it has nothing to do with tom cruise's favorite religion. might sound whacky, but it'll be more restrained sci-fi like solaris rather than star wars and lasers and shit.
while writing the backstory i'm making several conceptual (B) ILLUSTRATIONS that will also double as album art for the...
... (C) ALBUM i'm going to make inspired by the backstory. i'm excited about this. i already have one song done that, in a way, inspired the whole project. the song was completed a long time ago but i've always wanted to base a whole album around it. this will be that album. i haven't made a complete song in a loooong time so it will be a huge challenge to get back in the swing of things.
when the album and art are complete i'll launch into making a (D) MUSIC VIDEO for one of the songs. i already have a fairly good idea of the look and feel. this will be more of collaborative effort i think. i just don't have the capability to do some of these things myself like 3D and compositing.
and when all those things are done i am going to build a fairly robust (E) WEBSITE that will house all the media and also allow me to tell the expanded version of the backstory through an interactive immersive flash-based game. not a video game per se, but more of an online multi-media narrative with some different forms of audience participation.
maybe this sounds dorky to some people, but to me it sounds like huge fun and a gigantic challenge. i don't expect to be finished with it for at least another 2 years. working a full-time job and other obligations kind of curtail my spare-time output these days. but that also means i am in no rush and will be sure to get things right the first time around. it's all about the details and quality over quantity. i've never worked on a creative project of this scope before. should be interesting to see if i can pull it off.

rock on, dude! big projects like this are always tough for me to stick with but i've found that as long as I don't let myself leave it along for too long, eg stay active, then the project stays alive. slow and steady baby.

Do it Do it Do it . . . you're giving me a rowdy hard on just thinking of this. I'd really like to get into more video stuff. It's demanding in terms of the time it takes...but then again so is making electronic music.
