--> Hi there guys, i know theres a bunch of FLStudio users hanging out in the EM411, so i thought id give some tips on how to give your music some more flavor.

If you dont know how to calculate the knob percentages, the information screen will tell you when you click and hold a knob

1.) Tape Hiss without the need for a seperate VST.
Who here likes the saturated sounds of the cassette? Ever wanted to put it in a song to give it a "old" feel to it?

All you need is the 3xOSC Plugin which is already given to you in FLStudio.
*Grab your 3xOSC, and in "OSC 2" and "OSC 3"bring down both Volume knobs to Zero.
*In "OSC 1", select the 6th Shape (Right before the ? box).
*Here you can then tweak the CRS and the Fine knobs to your liking.
*But before going any further, bring down the overall volume of the 3xOSC to about 2 or 3%.

*Rename the Channel to something of your liking, such as "Tape Hiss". Do this by right clicking on the channel in the Step Sequencer, and selecting "Rename.."
*Give your Tape Hiss its own spot in the mixer, such as Insert 3.
*Go into the Piano roll for the 3xOSC and simply make a note that stretches out all 4 beats, so what you have, should sound like a constant Hiss. (The note you play does not matter, it can be C5, it can be D#6)
link
*Then just add it and make it however long you like it in the Playlist.
*(Optional) Add EQ in an FX slot and mess around with those until you get your desired effect.

2.) Detuned Synth (Boards of Canada Effect)

You can do this with whatever other plug in you have, but we're going to work with 3xOSC once more.

*Grab your 3xOSC, and in "OSC 2" and "OSC 3" bring down both Volume knobs to Zero.
*Now go to the [INS] tab.
*On the ATT knob (Attack Time) (2nd from left), bring it down to Zero
*On the HOLD knob (3rd from left), bring it down to Zero
*On the REL knob (Release Knob) (Last knob from left), bring it down to Zero
*Now more your DEC knob (Decay Knob) to a little over half.
*Now move to the Tension part (the little TNS next to Envelope), and on the DEC knob, move it about 17%
*Head back to the TIME part.
link

That will give your 3xOSC a piano like feel. Remember to bring down the over all volume to about half!

*Now go to your mixer, and in any open Insert, Open a new FX called "Fruity Peak Controller"
*Underneath LFO, bring the BASE knob to 40%
*Bring the VOL knob to about 20%
*On the SPD knob, bring it to about 3:11
*Right next to the words LFO select the last shape.
link

*Now back to your 3xOSC, go back to the PLUGIN tab if you havent already done so.
*In "3xOSC 1", right click the "FINE" knob and select "Link to Controller"
* Under "Internal Controller" Select "Peak ctrl (Insert *) - LFO" and choose Accept
link
(Insert * depends on which insert you placed you Peak Controller)

Now play any notes and hold them down, neat effect! You may not be able to notice it very well, but to get a more dramatic feeling, Mess with the LFO knob, the VOL knob, the SPD knob, and the PHS knob!

Hear the sample!

3.) Some built in Mixer present!

*On your browser, open the Mixer Presents, take any effect of your desire and simply drag it on any open Insert on the mixer with a instrument hooked up to it.

::WARNING:: this will delete all the previous FX's you had on the Insert before. Best to start with NO FX.

Simple as that! Mono Tape Simulation gives your instrument a extremely worn down feeling. As well as the Stereo Tape Simulation.

Try the "Outside the Club" on your music
Try the "Techno Pounder" on a Insert with heavy Bass Kicks!

Thats all for now! More to come later! (EDIT, dang, i was hoping those embedded images would work!)

cool stuff! thanks

Huh, I can't wait to get back home and try these.

That's some pretty cool stuff

If you layer the sounds from 1 and 2, (using Layer, incidentally) and add a bit of release to the tape hiss, together they sound pretty good!

sounds interesting but i rather go the ol' tiring road of recording the tracks seperately to a tapedeck :D

i miss 3xOSC and other nice and intuitive synths of fruity. do they have a vst package of them yet?

you could try to grab the VST's from the FL folder, but whether they work on another program... we just dont know.

they only have vst versions of the stuff you pay for or the fx.

i guess making vst versions of 3osc or slicer... u start to not need FL

for single drum hits on different channels, i like to use the layer splitting the note so i can sequence drums in one piano roll still being able to treat them with fx separately

the channels arpeggiators are very nifty for making sounds, esp on drum hits
For your detuned synth, why not just use the LFO thats already in 3OSC on the pitch page?

oh and you inspired me to create a similar blog!

i enjoyed this. i dont even use fruityloops and hate imageline with a passion. you should keep these coming, it was well written and informative. reminds me of the old em411.

anyways, not sure if you can in FL but i find that what really helps on the BOC detuned synth sound is if you have a delayed LFO.
my roland stuff (juno 106, rs-09), my mpc can do it, korg poly 800, etc.

if its available its usually right there with the LFO rate labeled DELAY and basically the more delay you have the longer it takes before your LFO fades up (starts modulating).
LFO delay + a longer release time and then time it right so the LFO really starts the detuning mostly on the release part of the sounds and things really start sounding boc.

you can do this with the moulation options on the second (i think, maybe third) tab, under the envelope section. Change pan, pitch, resonance, frequency etc with an envelope including delay, attack (fades in the lfo) amount and speed. i used it quite a lot in fl2.7!

thanks for all the kind words. i am writing a full tip guide for FLStudio and hopefully that will be of some use for novice and intermediate users.

@ Ejectorset

that sounds good, ill be sure to mess around with that and add it when i get the chance! thanks!

Yes you can add delay to any LFO- right click on the speed or delay knobs to sync their times to a musical interval.

wow these tips are great... well i guess i won't know if they are til i get home but they sound great. i'm looking forward to your completed tip guide as i've been just sort of figuring it out as i go, and often being frustrated and giving up. thanks a lot and keep it up.
