yeah, wasn't it. And Punch Drunk Love is up there in my top 10 films I most love and cherish. This should be really eciting. Daniel Day Lewis looks totally transformed. Again.

It's weird, magnolia seems like such a strict "love it or hate it" movie. I absolutely loved it. I am in awe of the phenomenal acting. I don't think Tom Cruise has ever done better (I've grown to really respect and admire that guy's talent) and Phillip Seymore Hoffman has gotta be in my top 5 favorite actors. But jesus, that entire cast was insane.
Have you seen his Hard 8 (also known as Syndey)? Great, great film and I love that he always uses his actors again. It just feels right when somebody does that. Like they are all in it for the same reasons and they all are on the same page. At the time of making our movie years ago I absorbed myself in just about every film I could get my hands on in order to dissect and pick apart, P.T. Anderson's films really stood out for me.
This definitely sounds promising. I can't say I'm a huge Daniel Day-Lewis fan but the guy definitely commands attention on the screen. I didn't know this was based on an Upton Sinclair novel too.

i've seen it like four times. i love everything about it except for the pacing, and the tone is a little slathered-on for me.

Yeah, Magnolia needed a good rewrite. I remember hearing that production was moved forward because of Cruiser's schedule and had it not been, it might have been a better film. A little leaner. And it's too indebted to Short Cuts to really stand out. But there are some great moments in it.
I thought he was a derivative filmmaker until Punch Drunk Love, which is a masterpiece. So I look forward to this one. A western! (kinda) and Ciaran Hinds is in it!

Yay!!!! Totally and utterly agree with you about Punch Drunk Love, and I felt the same way!!! Actually, my father and sister both saw Magnolia and hated it, so I didn't see it. And I myself had hated Boogie Nights (still do.) But then after seeing PDL I rented Magnolia and really thought it was very powerful, and actually I think it was a much better film than Short Cuts, which was mean spirited and, imo, kind of weak. Hard to say why. It's been so long. I just felt and still do that Altman stopped making great films after the 70s.

this movie looks quite refreshing actually, not ripe with special effects or spilling over with action but it entertaining as well. Kinda like Oh Brother Where Art Thou?
