--> So my gf & I just got here like 1.5 weeks ago and would like to meet some folks and see what EMerz are up to in PDX...

I would love to hear about where to see the cool gear, hang out, see stuff, etc. also...

So - Who all is down with grabbing some coffee and hanging out one day soon?

There are a gazillion cool places here, I like Red & Black or Stumpton's or whatever.

Sweet! Portland is a great city. For cool musical gear, the only store that's worthwhile in my opinion is Trade Up music. There's one on SE Division and one on NE Alberta, both are used instrument stores that usually have some things of interest for electronic musicians. Aside from Trade Up, there's Super Digital, which has mostly pro audio recording stuff. Those are the only gear places I can recommend. For cds/records, Jackpot, Music Millenium, Everyday Music, and Ozone3 (although I heard it was closing...) are good.

For hanging out, there's lots. I'd suggest Chuck Palahnuik's (sp?) book about site-seeing in Portland. I like weird stuff though.

I've been on the fringes of the em scene here, but I think it would be cool to meet people too.

welcome. if you are interested in meeting peeps i'd reccomend just making it out to the various shows/monthlies/weeklies in town.

check the next laptop lounge (last thursdays at pi-rem) for example. or tonight @ holocene. unrecognizeable now is playing.

While I will be checking out some shows, I thought it would be cool to meet in an enviroment that's more condusive to talking.

Plus, when it's meetup, everyone knows what it's for, you don't have to have awkward shouting introductions over the music, etc...

So - whoz down wid tha meetup?

:-D

laptop lounge is perfect for this. there's a lounge! ;) so no shouting necessary and you can always walk into the other room and hear the music loud if you like.

laptop lounge V1.0 is where i met 80% of the people i know in PDX. V2.0 is even better.

the next one is last thursday june 28th.

yeah, this is sorta what laptop lounge is good for! the music is always different, and it's a great meetup spot with plenty of quieter spots to chat...and totally unpretentious. Great people, great vibe, great music, pretty great beer selection...

one thing about portland is that it's pretty hard to get people organized here...from my experience. other than that, it's a great town for music and all else!

I'll try to be more sociable at the next laptop lounge -- my first time out, I decided to be a wallflower, for the most part. Recognized a few people by their online photos, though.

Ayite, I'll check out the lounge, I'll be the guy w/shaved hair prolly with my GF.

So where's the info on the lounge?

i think that would clash w/the artists booked to play ;)

you should try Ground Kontrol. that way if it does turn into a mess of clangorous noise it blend right in w/the video games.

To be honest, Drum Machine circles & Laptop Lounges sound cool, but I was more thinking something more low key/conversational, like just hanging out and saying hey.

Is anyone at all down with just grabbing a cup of coffee and chillin?

I mean come on, it's not that deep of a question, it's not that deep of a commitment...

It's just effin coffee!

No one expects the EM411 spanish Inquisition - No One!

cubestar- laptop lounge is very conversational and low key. seriously.. i shit you not. its the easiest way to meet your fellow em411'ers because lot's us go there. it's super chill. things like this are more or less where i see lot's of my friends at the same time and see what everyone's up to.

what neighborhood do you live in?

SE Hawthorne & 17th

Not hardcore enough for Gresham (yet).

YET?!?!?! Don't yearn to get to Gresham if you live in the Hawthorne area.

That being said, a coffee or beer meeting of em411 minds isn't a bad idea -- I'm up for it -- though I'm also all for showing up at Laptop Lounge and whatnot, as well.
