Well. . I'm about to be kicked out of home. . its a matter of about . . a month I guess.
I'lll spare you of the details. . basically - leaving university, not living up to my parents expectations, so I will be booted and stamped with a big red "F" for the rest of my life by them, even though its not the life I want.
Now the real problem I have is this. . . I don't own a computer. . and the laptop my dad was gonna buy me for my 21st. . well he won't buy it for me if I'm not at uni anymore..
So what I need to know is what you lot think is the most inexpensive option for writing music? I dont have farkall money. . I have to buy a car to get to my job so I can actually afford to live out cos I don't own one.
At the moment I'm trying to get my nintendo DS working as a sequencer but I'm having trouble, and I own a Novation Nova - but I might have to end up selling this to fund the car
OR i might get lucky and get a job near wherever I move out to..or within cycling distance.
If I can get the DS working as a sequencer I'll still need some second hand gear. . a synth definitely. . . a sampler maybe - but it will be a pain in the ass having to borrow a mates computer to copy/edit the samples over.
Perhaps an old cheap laptop?
What do you all think? What kind of synth can I get for signigicantly less than the cost of my Nova? A laptop that cheap would probably not be able to cope with even about 2 VST instances I guess so I'm not sure if thats a viable option?

crappy man.
my advice. Move downtown and walk to your job, forget the car, it's a money sucker, save, buy a good computer.

Taking time away from music to work on yourself and your non-musical life is not necessarily a bad thing. You will probably have bills, food, etc. to pay for in the next few months while you get on your feet.

don't know what its like for you to order shit online. obiviously youre on the same net but the shipping costs to you gotta be brutal. apple ibook g3s sell used as low as $200. that shipping will probally be the killer. once you get it good luck finding a friend who owns one and is into music

welcome to the _real_ world (almost), it sucks so much that eventually you'll get to like it's little pleasures, like a good meal after a month of eating garbage or being able to afford a couple of beers or some pot every second month

You'll have to learn to prioritize, and adapt to what you have to work with.
I'm trying not to lecture here.
Just make sure you eat and sleep well, then see what you have left over.
Yes, go ahead and improve your keyboard skills! (not knocking yer skills now, they may already be good??)
Anyway, it hardly sounds like the "end of the line" - maybe just the end of the parental lifeline. And that red F will fade with time, just don't stagnate.
good luck to you.
