Here is a link to a very illuminating article about one of my all time favorite producers - Luke Vibert. It just goes to show that you don't have to be a gear fiend to be a kick ass producer.

I really got into his "Musipal" wagon christ album, didn't realise it was all amiga.
The kerrier district and Amen Andrews stuff is definately my favourite.

just to show the other side of the coin, i can't stand either one of them.. reason nor vibert. it seems fitting for vibert to use such tools since it makes his brand of music easy to make.
don't mean to post shit here, just showing an alternate perspective.

He has found that the best way to mediate between his pedantic parameter tweaker side and his let-the-music-flow spirit is to work patiently and methodically for as short a time as possible. That is - work in loop mode, tweak like mad, get all the levels and fiddly bits right, then get out. The practical upshot is that he now sits on a stockpile of hundreds of perfected grooves ready to be fleshed out into full tracks.
I do this all the time... except I never get around to making them into tracks.

There was an earlier interview somewhere when he first revealed he was using Reason. In that interview he said he still sampled the TB-303 and used them as loops in Reason, so he's still using that [expensive] piece of hardware in that respect.
I remember in an old article in Remix, around the time of Musipal, that they showed all his vintage analog gear. It's a shame he's not using it. But he's a pot head, and he tours a lot, so he probably can't be bothered.

"But I did an album with BJ Cole a few years ago, he's a live steel guitarist "
As opposed to one of those steel guitarists that can only program their shows?

- HAHAHAHA, oh Vibert, he's so lost without his TB303 preprogrammed bassline.

haha, that BJ cole album is super cheez... in fact most vibert stuff I've heard is way cheesy. I guess it's ok if you like fun cheeky music.

he only recently (past couple of years) started using reason.. mostly for the sequencer. he still samples his hardware and occasionally releases a track that is obviously just hardware because you can hear the x0x boxes doing their thing.
it's easy to see why he likes the sampling/sequencer/all in one package of reason though. it's dead simple and fast. that guy writes tons of tracks.

i like fun cheeky music. i also like serious abstract stuff. i see no reason to equate one with more skill than the other. programming ≠ music, imo.
