--> i'm thinking about putting together a portable rack that i can take to gigs. whilst i like using ableton in a live situation, recently i've been veering towards the idea of having all my tracks driven by numerology on my laptop and firing samples from an mpc. i'd like to put together a rack with a waldorf pulse plus, an mpc (not sure which one yet), a kaoss pad mini, a teac 8x2 patchbay, a nord micromodular and a DSI evolver desktop. ideally i'd like to mount the mpc on a slide-out tray at the bottom. the evolver, kaoss pad and micromodular are probably going to very difficult to rack mount. has anyone mounted non-standard boxes before? any tips on building a custom rack?

i found this company link that do a nice line of affordable racks with wheels and telescopic handles, but never having owned my own rack before, i'm in the dark about their build-quality or reputation. any help, as always will be met with great appreciation and a free sushi dinner for all emmers in the tokyo metropolitan area

i have a skb case for my guitar, and it seems fairly well made. as well, they have some sort of lifetime warranty on their cases.

I've been meaning to get one of these as well.
Thanks for the link!

I also have a 12u SKB rack and it's decently made (probably wouldn't want to ship/fly all over with it, but it seems rugged enough for normal stuff).

Sounds like one of the pop-up deals like this link might work well for you (you could possibly velcro the oddball boxes to the pop up section and rack the normal stuff below). Somewhat pricey imo, but seems nice.

Oh, and if the rack doesn't have wheels, it's easy enough to attach some standard ones from the hardware store. The guy I bought mine from did so, and it works well on the cheap. Also if you buy a SKB, I believe all of them use these clips which is slightly annoying link

you can get sliding racks [usually for servers & such] like this: link

or you can get 2U ones like this: link

I have my amp sitting on a 2U sliding tray in my racks and although its great abd works for me, you might find the weight a bit prohibitive - they arent exactly light.

I did see a little while ago on ebay a case where the lid comes off so you have the top and front exposed - that way you could have the MPC on top and all the other gear racked underneath. Ill try and find something similar and post a link.

and a free sushi dinner

wtf is it with the japanese and raw fish? they should do a cultural exchange programme with the scottish and get on the deep fat fryer tip! ;)

sprouts, logo, zanf - thanks for all the advice. the pop-up top looks perfect, and the server slide-out try is exactly what i need.

Drexon - they do look good don't they> now all i've got to do is collect all the lovely gear to fill it ;)

and sashimi is raw fish - sushi is a way of preparing rice with vinegar and sugar. there is some deep fat fried food over here too, if you ever make it out to tokyo zanf, i'm going to treat you to the biggest tonkatsu ever link

sadly no double fried pies over here yet tho

looking at that wiki page, the Katsu-sando looks like a fish finger sandwich, which it probably is in some respects!!

remember to give us an update w/pix when youve got this all sorted.

for my next gig im just going to gaffer tape some modules together and throw them in a bag
although a perfectly sized rack thing with wheels would be nice

katsu-sando is good, but sadly, most of the bread in japan is terrible....
just went out for dinner with my in-laws and had huge amounts of sushi and sashimi...squid, fish eggs, whelks, abalone...tasty.

i'll definately post pics when i get all this done. it was necessitated by seeing people like dj merck (he just sat behind his lappie for an hour and a half with no discernible interest in what he was doing) and thinking, i nod my head more when i play, but i can't be that exciting to watch. and after watching my mate stan play live with just a virus b and a weeny casio controller keyboard and do some extremely fucked up shit that almost got out of control, i thought: "that looks like fun!"

bla - i love gaffer tape too. i wrapped my gameboy in "crime scene - do not cross" tape. didn't improve my performance tho. my mate buts all his fx pedals on a 8"x2" board with tape. but he plays sitting on the floor most of the time.
