--> After a long time of not performing solo (close to three years), I'm playing three gigs this month. I didn't mean for it to happen this way, but it's testament to the fact that there are three awesome monthlies for experimental music in Portland right now.

I'll be debuting my new solo project, The Oo-Ray, which is improvised live cello looping mixed with distortion, to produce fuzzy walls of sound. How does it sound? I've put up some samples up on my own blarg for your enjoyment/perusal: link

Here's the dates:

Thurs July 12 - Fiasco @ ground kontrol (special shoegaze night!) - 511 NW Couch
Friday July 20 - Aleatoric @ Apotheke - 1314 NW Glisan St # 2A
Weds July 25 - WTF? @ Fez Ballroom - 318 SW 11th Ave

In other cello news, I've been learning the Prelude to the first Bach Suite...it's really intimidating, but it's been a dream of mine to play it for nine years. So I'm amazed and grateful that I'm working on it.

Also, I am just starting to learn Thumb position, which is really hard. Basically past fifth position, you rest your thumb on the string and it acts like a capo, which lets you play scales and notes far above the normal range. It's very hard for me right now, but I'm sure with more work, it's gonna not sound like a schreeching cat.

Cool. Are any of these places non-smoking?

Also, I remember I had to play that Prelude for a concert in high school, all went well except that I played the last chord totally out of tune. What a great way to end it!

Also, question: what are some techniques for reducing feedback live? I'm using a pickup that clips to my bridge, but I still get some feedback, which I think I can deal with.

I will try and be at least 90 degrees to the speakers so I don't get sound waves directly bouncing back.

I've been experimenting with using notch filters to kill the freq bands that feedback and inverting the phase to stop cascading feedback (which works when it gets out of control).

Anyone else have any other tricks?

is it still legal to smoke in bars in pornland?

Aleatoric is non-smoking definitely. I think ground kontrol is as well.

That last part of the prelude is a bitch to be sure. Especially the last arpeggio leading into the chord. It's doubly not fun for me since I am double jointed and it's hard to curve my fingers properly.

Bach was a cruel master to be sure.

Yeah, it's still legal to smoke in bars down here...but some places lay down the line.

oh snap! dude i have to go to this.

when are u playing in seattle

Seattle? Where is seattle?
its near europe

effing jdg, i'll drive nug.

Sweet Roshi, I can't wait to hear what you're working on.

Wow, everything is close to europe.

Except Canadia.

Seriously, it'd be really fun to play seattle but I've lost touch with all the people who book shows there...any tips?

The fiasco show on thurs is kind of a dry run for Aleatoric...but hopefully all the shows will be good.

we will soon have no smoking in bars...

...but we still have the loostest stripper+alcohol rules this side of Las vegas

Next month... ALL NUDE CELLO REVUE?

"gasp, he's playing.... WITHOUT A BOW!!"
