Greetings all...
Just getting started, or more like finally getting my musical act together. After nearly a year of gear lusting and bumbling about with the "home studio" I finally feel I am ready to really start writing.
Or more like I finally decided to stop so much research of gear and get on with the music...
Wish me the best.
Lately my favorite influences are groups like Harmonia, NEU!, and a bunch of King Tubby Dubs (Blood and Fire Label). How close I get to those things is under serious question, but I hope in the end to have music with some of the same spirit. I know, easier imagined than done, but the journey of a thousand miles...
Gear wise Ive bought and sold way too many synths. Either Ive gotten tired of trying new ones or I have found the magic sounds Ive looked for in the JoMoX Sunsyn.
I plan to finish my project with:
Jomox Sunsyn
Moog Source
Analogue Solutions SEMblance, and
Waldorf Microwave II
Hope to have some real music to upload here soon. In the meantime just blogging about fun synth things and how Im going about it all. Any tips or nifty ideas relating to melody making, synthesis or drum programming would be welcome.
Sound-wise it looks like the biggest challenge for me is going to be percussion. I put the foot down on gear spending, so no drum machine allowed. I'll be using some patches from the Microwave II for drum sounds. I hope I can get something similar to Kraftwerk's RadioActivity album... something simple yet effective. I will most likely be running the MWII through analog filters . That synth sure sounds good to me coming through analog filters for some reason.
More to Come... if all goes well

just dive in a forgive yourself if you don't sound like kraftwerk. remember also that if you just use the synths in the "way they're supposed to be used" you'll be missing some of the fun

I like your name! But then I was a lifeguard on the Erie shore once upon a time. Sounds like you should be making some cool music. Go, go, go!

I feel like I've gotten percussion sounds I like using only samples freely or cheaply available. I mix samples together a lot, add in white noise, add recorded hand claps, etc. Judicious use of eq, compression, etc. and I get drums that I like the sound of. If you want, download some of the free drum synths out there (eg drumatic).

yes... drum samples. I know there have to be some good ones out there. I also have a vst plugin with some samples (EXSP) but with VST there is such a big latency issue on my computer. Never the less, Im sure I could write patterns with other sounds and copy the midi parts to the track with the sample player vst. The latency isnt a problem for playback at least. I'll reconsider using them.
