Today is a special day for me, as two years ago exactly I got my copy
of ableton live and I started doing electronic music. It was a weird
time for me cause I had gotten ill, which was driving me crazy, and I
needed some kind of way out of my life before going mad. On a kind of
hunch I asked for a copy of ableton live, had never tried the software
before, but I must say it was a really good choice, haven't found
anything so "flowing" yet. Here is a list of stuff I found on my
webserver, kind of like milestones in my development (also funny stuff
I found which I didn't remember at all . This is going to be a long
post with lots of mp3s, but it is important for myself also to go over
all of it and see where I am coming from
First track ever, dated august 8:
link . Scroll through to half
of it, the beginning is boring. It was actually played for some kind
of dance performance in a squatted industry hanger.
End of august I discovered em411 <3 <3 <3 you peepz, that was the
second best thing after starting doing em
First track I really liked, done for mixit 40 here:
link
This was more some kind of lucky accident, but hadn't I made this
track I would have been frustrated and would have been likely to stop.
Some kind of funny remix of that first track:
link
Then I used to play some hardcore gigs in france, found some funny
loops (I had completely forgotten about those!):
link
link
Then in january 2006 I started picking up the guitar again, with mild
success. I started trying to build complicated reaktor autojam
ensembles to jam with, here is one such recording, not very conclusive:
link
End of march I first tried a bass at a jam session, sold my complete
CD collection the next week and bought me a bass It took some time
until I understood the concept of groove though lol Here is one of
the first few crappy jams, right before STFU weimar:
link
In STFU Weimar I heard all of you guys, and millicent especially, I
was like *w0w*, changed my approach to sound. Here is some clip I did
trying to copy all the weird sound I had heard:
link
That's when I did two or three gigs with some kind of live dnb, that
was fun too:
link
link (backup track in case my computer
crashed)
Around that time I finished "felinophoria", first CDR at
link . IN retrospect, I think it is quite lacking
in sound and groove, but I <3 all the songs, they have grown on me.
First "focused" electro tracks around that time as well:
link
First dabs in writing music out by hand for classical ensembles,
not so conclusive, way too much work at first.
link
In September 2006, first liveset I really liked:
link
Then I stopped doing music for a few months, at least doing tracks,
focused more on practicing bass or something. I found one funny clip
though:
link
December: first liveset with live bass playing, went down really well
although we had to stop after 20 minutes (a friend was rapping and
scratching with me): link
End of january I started doing music again, focusing more on "new"
approaches, so tried doing songs in reaktor entirely:
link
Focussed more on straight grooving things, which ended up in all the
acid I did. I did however do one track for the peloton compo which I
spent an awful lot of time into, and which came out really well I
think. Here are so clips of the song being built, which makes me miss
elements I removed for the final song:
link
link
Spent more time sequencing basslines to have the fun, learnt a few
idmish things (rolls by hand). Altogether, I tried to find a formula
to make my electro stuff:
link
link
Got my first piece of hardware, the machinedrum around that time. It
took me a few months (in fact, until 2 weeks ago) to wrap my head
around it. I got the nord micromodular from crabster a few months
later, it was much quicker to get to grips with that one. All in all,
hardware changed my life pretty much.
Started doing some dubstep in a hurry with nanoc to give it to a few
producers, here is a clip of MD only dubstep:
link
Built a liveset with MD and reaktor only, quite different form my
normal liveset in ableton. Was an interesting experience, not sure if
I'd do it again this way:
link
Also did some huge ambient set, was very interesting cause I'd never
really done it before, made me focus a lot on sounds and
atmosphere. It's the only liveset where I ended up pressing play and
letting it run, cause I didn't want to mess with the levels
link
Then I built this electro set with MD and nord and almost only midi in
ableton, sounding very raw, but very much what I wanted to do. I think
it's pretty much the end of my road to electro funkyness, it's the
liveset I did at STFU Heidelberg. I think I'll be playing this again
quite a few times, I like it very much and it took me a long long time
to prepare. The real version is about twice as long, I cut it down for
stfu hd:
link
Now I'm trying to do a lot more stuff on the MD, having discovered
it's goodness. Also trying to do some nice sounding minimal techno to
have a set to make people dance here, as rough detroit-style electro
doesn't gather much crowds:
link (MD + ableton)
link
(MD only jam)
Also writing some stuff for my funk band, taking my electro songs and
redoing them. I'd also like to write an idmish - chillish set with
laptop and bass so I can perform in jazz cafes. This is going to be a
challenge.
This was a lot, but I felt like I needed to recap a bit what I've been
doing these last two years. It was wonderful !!! and a lot of it is
due to you peepz. I owe you all, especially nq, filarion, nq, soft,
and all the others I may forget

thx for the nice comments everybody, I think I'll also focus on getting a bit of the exhuberant sound of the beginning back. I was much more open o playing with effects at the start than later on.
