--> I saw the latest installment of the ghost in the shell series, Solid State Society, down at the barbican last night and all I can say is, WOW!

Any other ghost in the shell fans around here?

Ghost in the shell's vision of the future is the most compelling and plausible I've come across. Scifi tends to over-induldge in the fantastic elements of technology. Ghost in the shell though, weaves the scifi into real social and political issues and strikes the perfect balance between utopia / dystopia.

Solid State Society takes the series to the next level! It's entertaining as fuck, but the social commentry is as penetrating as it is disturbing.

I've loved the whole SAC series...though I can't seem to get into 2nd GIG as much. 1st GIG was so perfect.

Have SSS on my tivo...need to finish watching it one of these days

Nice to hear Solid State Society is looking good. I loved both movies and SAC 1st Gig was nothing short of awesome. Haven't seen all the 2nd gig yet but they don't disappoint so far. Yes I am a GITS fan.

Im a GITS fan as well.

When I was in Belfast, a workmate and I met up with his friends who sorted us tickets to see GITS 1 & 2, back to back. I promptly fell asleep and snored apparently!! [it was a long, hard week]

Ill be up for popping down to the Barbican for this - might even go after work tomorrow.

naa, you've missed it at the barbican. they showed it as as the final film in the japaninmation series. but it's showing at the ica on the 15th and they're going to have the producer of the show there too (http://www.ica.org.uk/Behold%20a%20Dream%3A%2020%20Years%20of%20Production%20I.G+14744.twl). i'm definately going to check it out again!

yeah, i prefered the 1st gig over the 2nd. just gotta love that laughing man. the 2nd gig got really heavy on the savour / jesus imagery. SSS picks up on that theme just slightly though. f*k it's just briliiant!

Yep - got the first series lined up to see. Got put off by the first gits episode a few years back, but have since learned that nearly all initial episodes of anime series seem to be a bit daft. Love the gits film!

can't wait for SAC3 myself.. SSS is really nice though, good to see they can pull off a tight story in a shorter movie too.

I really liked SAC2 - the laughing man case was a bit too drawn out I thought, could've been compacted to half a season.

I'm on an Anime rampage right now anyway, watching Samurai Shamploo and Black Lagoon at the moment.

For anyone who hasn't seen it, be sure to check out Lain. 13 episodes, really tight storyline, great aesthetics. And the Appleseed movie is pretty nice too, liked it a lot better than GitS 2 - it can't touch the plot of the Appleseed Manga books though.

Lain is incredible, gets off to a really, really slow start but once it gets going i does your head in. it's the sort of anime you'd expect david lynch to make

There's no sign of a SAC3 yet. The screening at the barbican was actually a production ig showcase and was kicked off with a bit of a talk about the studio and what they're working on and they don't have another one lined up just yet.

didn't really rate appleseed that much though. would dig to check out the manga. i've just started getting back into comics, reading the dark knight returns at the mo. got any more manga recommendations?

GITS 2 (movie) was so pretentious and boring. Plus the fact that the Major is gone made it even worse.

I think the SAC series has really been where it's at.
mmh, i had a phase of heavy manga reading when I could borrow all the complete book collections from a friend, read GitS and Appleseed Mangas mainly, so unfortunately not really.

too bad about sac3 was kind of hoping they'd start it off next year or so. - i watched Blood+ recently - it's a lot more like your "regular" anime fare in the way it developes, leaves you hanging at the end of an episode etc, but still nice enough to keep you busy for 50 episodes ;)

yeah, GITS 2 was my least favorite of the lot. it was visually stunning though! and that looping reality maze that batu gets stuck in did my head in!

the major is back and sporting bigger baps than ever in SSS

i was well excited when a little manga gallery opened up on brick lane. they've got a massive library of manga, but it's all japanese :/ should have a bit of a chat with the owners to see if they can point me in the right direction though...

+1 for Lain and Samurai Champloo (an all time fav)
Check out S-Cry-Ed, just got Samurai7 it looks cool too.
Didn't know their were any other anime heads on here.

champloo really blew my mind, it's such a good mix of weird things and so flawlessly executed.

And cheers to whoever recommended flcl.

why are all you peepl talking in code?

OH GOD THERE'S ANOTHER GHOST IN THE SHELL?

sorry caps.

yes fan. big one.
