Ok. We need to talk. I used to really like Daft Punk until em978 mentioned this link in the other daft punk blog. I thought instead of hijacking that thread with this discussion, I'd bring it over here.

Take a listen to some of this- a lot of it strikes me as really lazy use of samples! I listen to some of it and think that it's a fair use, and then i listen to other parts and I think "wow thats wayyy too close to a direct ripoff."
Have they gone too far? Doesn't somebody else deserve a LOT of the credit for a Daft Punk record?

i assume those artists are getting paid for the use of their samples, so it really doesn't bother me.....

someone check the liner notes. maybe credit's are written in there?
would explain why the live shows are so expensive - perhaps they're actually paying a load of other artists for samples.

Well, I think that either one can feel like Daft Punk are really unoriginal and terrible, or you can marvel at their skill at being DJs. That's what they are in the end, DJs. The music they do is more akin to mash-ups or dj mixes than original compositions. I suppose one could say they are lazy and that "anybody could do that" or that it's easy...I dunno, I think if it was so easy, someone would have done it first, or done it better, so I don't think that's really fair. Discovery is still a great record, and I think one can enjoy it for that.

I guess i was confused about their level of involvement with the creation of these songs- a lot of their record appears to be a disco introduction run through a compressor and a sampler with a bass drum.
But frankly, I like this source material so much I'd rather just listen to a lot of it! I'll just run the mp3s through a compressor, lol.

yeah theres a shit ton of great disco that got swept under the rug as disco lost popularity. once synths started working their way into disco it got unbelievable. Listen to Peter Brown- Do Ya Wanna get Funky With me?

also, that Oliver Cheatham record is from 1990. hardly old, or "classic"
I know all these musicians are getting money for this- which does make me happy. I just wish more people would take the time to hire musicians to come in an play a piece!

i guess it depends on what you expect from an artist/musician/media maker. Theres a case to be made that they are just recontextualising, recycling, and bringing new life to cultural information-and that theres nothing wrong with it. But if your idea of what it means to be an artist is tied up with romantic notions of struggle and creativity (as i notice that mine still is to an extent, and this is an idea that is constantly reinforced by our media) then it comes as a disappointment that they sampled huge chunks of old tracks.

agreed. but i bet they struggled at the beginning. like everyone. its only now we can turn round and say ahh yeah its just a load
of old samples, cos they are famous, but when i first heard their sound on john peel about ten years ago it was pretty fresh i thought.

well, maybe it's just me, but it seems like if you have Around the World and/or HBFS, you've got them all.
i come from an upbringing where being a musician or performer means creating your own music, but some people are very talented at splicing and mashing other people's work together. it's what fuels 80% of the 'DJ' and 'producers' of electronic music.
it's funny actually, i learned that people did this (yes, i'm very ignorant, i did not grow up listening to hip hop or rap *at all*, so this is from a weird perspective, and i know the entire history of this practice is squarely in the hiphop/rap areas) for the first time when someone explained to me that amon tobin doesn't sit there and write all that great music that he fits together. it depressed me for days... i had learned of tobin just a few weeks beforehand, and was STUNNED at his work, until i was enlightened. granted i still think amon tobin is the bee's knees, but back then it was a shocker.
i doubt DP has credits on the album for their sampling, that's almost never done, unless the point of the sample was to highlight the sample. as a music student i remember having endless ideological issues with this back when i was a stubborn stuck up conservatory brat, but have grown to accept it as industry standard.
it's still highly annoying not to see credits on albums. especially when it's obviously NOT the producer, and not even a small sample. look at Rithma, awesome funky soulful house et al, but i'll be damned to hell if he plays and sings every part on his albums. meanwhile, atom heart is kicking everyone's ass.
