--> The good news is I bought a Nord Lead 2X from Bleen via paypal & it has arrived in the UK.

The bad news is that HM Revenue & Customs have slapped on £89 (approx $170) V.A.T. ! + import Duty + Parcel Force Clearance Fee.

This is bad news

Does anyone have any experience of this & whether I can try and reclaim the money back from customs?

Are they in the right?

Should I have asked for it to be marked as a gift?

whenever i send stuff to zanf, i mark it as a gift.. and put a birthday card in there

i'm afraid anything valued over (i think) £18 gets taxed by customs.

i thought i managed to avoid customs on the modular i bought used from the UK, but then i got a nice invoice from ups about four weeks later for 60$.

I haaaaate UPS.

I recently received a bill from them asking for $68 in customs and duty fees for a package that was supposed to have been delivered on June 7th that they can't find. Since putting a trace on the package to see where it is they've called me 3 times asking if I've received it. Dumbasses.

oh no room........bad news. the wrose news is that there is nothing you can do about it. it's one to try to avoid with things like what jdg mentioned but they can still stiff you. when i was looking to buy komplete 4 form the US I decided not to as even though the seller was willing to mark the price as half the actual price it would still have been taxed etc.....and I couldn't seem to find out at what rate etc.....seemed totally arbitary to be.....but non-negotiable. sometimes you get away with it, sometimes you don't - free trade eh?

As jdg said, he always sends me stuff marked as a gift with a really low value.

I got an Eventide H3000s from a guy in Texas that was £500 but he marked it up as $279 and I paid £30 customs on it [including parcelforce fee]. I got an FMR RNC and the guy marked it up as $80 and I paid about £12.

The amounts are £18 for merchandise and £36 for gifts before any taxes are calculated.

ok thanks

shafted by customs - what fun

love the pic btw
youch, i had no idea fees were that big!

we pay 17.5% VAT [value added tax] - what pisses me off most about it is that it doesnt distinguish between new and secondhand.

well it looks like i'll have to chalk that up to experience

yup - and if you'd bought it from jdg, he would have put some very tasty cookies in with it.

i bet bleen just farted in the box and tried lighting it

if you marked things as "for repair" then they don't charge you.. at least that's what happened when i shipped the machinedrum to elektron in sweden for the UW upgrade.

also, mark it as a gift.. that's probably even safer.

i did fart in the box, but i had no idea about the "sending as a gift" part. WTF? i feel terrible about this now that roomy has to pay more just be able to pick up his nord. booo!!!! this VAT thing is for the birds! i was amazed at how expensive EVERYTHING was last week when i was in scotland. i'll never complain about prices in the states again.

i had to pay about £20 tax on a tx81z
somehow they imagined it cost £79
i felt like arguing at the time but ended up doing fuck all because i couldnt be arsed
