--> I need to get out of Florida. Excessive heat, low overall intelligence, poor wages, old people, lack of culture, corporate mouse, huge suburbs. I've made a lot of nice friends while here, not saying it's impossible not to be entertained here, but the weather and visual environment is having an effect on me and limiting visual creative influence.

What are some cool places to live? Four electronic musicians I know are making it straight for Portland. I'm trying to decipher some alternatives. I'm 21, no degrees yet, so I don't think a huge city would be right at this moment.

Portland's not huge at all. I live here, and there is only about half a million people in Portland proper. It's not too expensive, and I think that it's easier to find a job here than it was a year ago. It's a great place to live, I think.

Seems like Portland is calling you. I've just heard it's hard to find work... looks like Jim here says it's on the up.

Chicago is nice too. It's not that big ... ....

Portland's a good sized city, but not HUGE. There are jobs, depending on what you want to do -- but minimum wage is higher than average here, and housing is available....

Yep, good size is Portland. Biggish if you add up all of the 'burbs, but city proper is manageable as Jim and mulletballet said.

Unemployment is no longer the highest in the country as it was for a few months there, so that's good. And yeah, housing is pretty affordable still (but that's changing quickly).

What type of work would you be looking for if you moved to Portland? Maybe we can help you find something.

I Seattle.
Never been to Portland, that's my next trip.

vancoover BC.
i love that city. i'd live there if i coudl

seattle has jumped the shark.
portland is getting ready to jump the shark

there are no sharks in portland
+1 x a billion for coover, beautiful beautiful beautiful town that but be careful, it's full of canadians so watch your back

cuz sharks hate hippies.

according to Jaws, sharks in fact eat hippies

what does jumped the shark mean?

TV term, originated with Happy Days--basically means: Became Shitty with Over the Top Stunt Plots

ah,... good to know. thanks!

Chicago hasn't jumped the shark. Don't listen to Jim O'Rourke in interviews when he disses Chicago, it got much better after he left.. he's a douche. I mean c;mon .. he thinks Kevin Drumm has talent.

Lots of neighborhoods are getting nicer ... catch 'em while it's cheap.

Portland sounds pretty rad. I did some city comparison tools, even if it has 'jumped the shark' it appears to have a lot more going for it statistically and probably good influence being between seattle and san francisco.

I went up to Milwaukee and drove through Chicago a little bit, didn't have too much money to see much, but the shorewood area by the university in milwaukee was pretty nice. The areas seem really interesting, but the contrast from my native Florida culture made things feel "grey/brown/uniform" more so than used to. But that's most likely from not interacting with the culture intensely enough.

I think I'd like to find a 30hr/week part time work. Any kind of creative work is optimal, but if it's something boring then part time would help make it bearable. Possibly $1,600/m+
