I'm going to buy a new laptop today or tomorrow, and am wondering what you guys think of the following. I'm basically dithering between two reasonably powerful and sleek LG laptops. One has a mini screen on the outside of the laptop and can apparently run windows vista Gadgets while the computer is off. See picture.
If I don't take this flashy piece of bling, for the same money I can get up from 1.8ghz to 2ghz, and internal support for the compact flash memory card that my digital camera uses. Otherwise I'd need a (cheap) external adapter. There's no other difference in the models.
What do you think?
There might be other nice laptops in this price range but I havn't seen any that really got me drooling...

Wow, I didn't know LG made laptops -- that looks cool -- but if it were me, I'd go for more power under the hood than the cool screen on the back. (I really didn't want Vista, so I haven't looked into the 'gadgets' or anything)
Have you looked at the Gateway 17" notebooks? They have multi-memory card readers, etc. I just ordered my Gateway, unfortunately, they estimate over a month from the order time to delivery

I definitely want 12", 2kg and lots of power. I think the sideshow thing can go online every 15mins, get latest RSS and email and display it without consuming much of the battery power, and besides, it's cool as hell. I guess some interesting gadgets will come out in the future. But yeah as you said, I'm leaning towards more horsepower. It's already a VERY shiny laptop :-/
why cant I have everything dammit!

I can't even get an LG notebook here in the USA -- they don't seem to be available, I've been trying to find one online since I saw your post... argh.

hey that sideshow gadgets thing is fricking awesome, what a great idea! I use dashboard widgets on the mac all the time, in fact sometimes I boot up the computer just to get to it--I would love it if I could check those out without booting up!

pure gimmick, no question, but a gimmick that sounds useful.

heheh gimmicks rule :-)
but sadly, I've decided not to go with the extra screen, and now need to decide between a 12" or a 14" screen. I like 12" buyt it costs 15500sek and the 14" only 11500sek. For me who's not so rich that's a bloody huge difference. Any advice from you guys on this, considering it'll mostly be a studio laptop, with occasional trips outside? I like to sit in bed or on the toilet when surfing. 12" seems neat but is it practical to use say ableton or reaktor on stage without having to bend over and put my nose to the small screen?? I can get a korg microcontrol or something with that price difference...
