This blog is a bit belated, but I figured some of you would appreciated it, so I thought I'd share.
Last Wednesday my girlfriend and I headed down to the Dakota Jazz Club and saw the greatest show I have ever seen. I am talking about none other than the band that influenced not only me, but the entire landscape of pop, soul, blues and funk music, Booker T and the MGs.
The concert was a nice mixture of groove and improvisation with more blues-jazz leanings. The guitarist, Steve Cropper, is quite the showman. He played his guitar like a *ahem* member to woo a woman in the front row to great comic effect and had us all clapping and dancing. The guys (minus Al since the 80s, RIP) are still high energy today and played a heartfelt show which they capped with Dock of the Bay, which we helped sing, in honor of the people who died on the 35W bridge.
The best part about the whole night was that I got to meet and chat with the guys. Booker struck me because of his modesty and kindness. When I shook his hand and told him how much his music means to me, I was sputtering out sentence fragments like and idiot but he just looked me in the eyes and said "thank you" with the sincerity that comes from understanding just how much music can mean to someone.
Then Katie and I went into the green room and I sat on the couch with Steve for a few minutes. He and Duck were funny guys and very gracious, considering they had just come from Europe earlier that day and had not even been to the hotel (their luggage was in the green room with them).
At the end of the night I walked away with a signed album (I had them sign Doin' Our Thing cause it's the only o.g. pressing I have of theirs.) and Katie got a pick from Steve that has his name and face on it. I don't think I could have dreamed of a better night.
If you've read this far, thanks for sharing in my enthusiasm!

Sometimes meeting your idols can turn out well...
Usually it's the elder folks who are so relaxed and willing to have a chat, had sortlike experiences with some ageing jazz cats

They are doing a limited tour because this year was the fiftieth anniversary of Stax and there was a PBS documentary on them two weeks ago and that dood is re-opening Stax.
I'm still giddy from it.
