hehe. I'd say product placement is a means toward an end that has obvious costs, but the benefits may be worth it for a low budget film. Since this happens mostly in big budget films anyway, it's as mr lynch says.

If you watch the complete interview, which is included in the response section, he gives a pretty good argument for his stance on it (before he states said stance, which isn't until the end). That argument might seem a little half-baked to me if it weren't for the movie Primer which was probably the best thing I saw in 2005, and was made on $8,000.
I did find it a little funny that he devotes so much time to endorsing his coffee and book, but then again it's different when it's your own products.
And yeah, it does seem like it's the big productions that are digging deep into whatever pockets are within their reach. I don't think a young, sincere director can afford product placement because credibility is so important early on.
