Do you meditate? I've done some tai chi and chi kung, but that's about it. Chi Kung was great, long-form tai chi seems like it only 'works' once you really know it, which i imagine takes years. short-form tai chi was better.
Anyway, i'm about to start grad school and i think some form of mediation would probably calm me down and "center my energy", and I could use your advice if you've had some good experiences for me to draw on.

I used to alot. . I had a little run in with codeine the last year or so though which meant I was either too content to GAF or had a racing mind that would not go still.
Gettin back to normal now and plan on getting back into it though . . I miss being able to formulate thoughts and concentrate.
Mainly just "generic" buddhist meditation - Not really following any strict forms - probably not maximising the effect, just using it to clear my mind and such. .
Tai Chi interests me a bit . .got any more comment on it?

movement along with the mediation helps me maintain focus. like i said, chi kung worked better for me, i really felt like i was in touch with my body. with those things the main thing is to find a teacher/school that you can connect with.
as an aside, I had a run in with poly-drug abuse. ended up with moderate paranoia (imagining wordless interactions between me and ppl that were totally not happening). took a wile but i recovered. You'll get better, though it'll take time and energy. formulating thoughts is a lot of fun, tho, no doubt ;)

i've found that meditation (at least for me) is not really a practice...more just a state. btw, where are you going for grad school flies?

I don't practice meditation as much as mindfullness, such being aware when I'm getting pissed off on the bus, etc.
At best, I think it's helping me to concentrate my energies more, and to not overly emotionally invest myself in outcomes where I have very little control.

I have been thinking about this A LOT lately. The David Lynch stuff was making me think about it today even more.
I tried to for about a week in March and I felt like I didn't really "get it" so I didn't keep it up.
Anyone want to be my roshi?

I've meditated on and off for years, but recently i've been getting back into it. I find william basinski's disintegration loops to be a nice meditation aid, i just focus on the music and anytime i feel my mind drift, slowly bring it back to the music again.
I recently read David Lynch's new book where he talks about his use of trancendental meditation, and after a bit of further research, realised it seems like a total rip-off. Apparently they charge you thousands of dollars a month, and all they basically teach is to repeat a mantra in your head which is supposed to be chosen specifically for you, but seeing as the point of the mantra is just to allow your mind one thing to focus on so you can cancel out your internal dialogue, i don't see why the mantra couldn't just be anything you want it to be, as long as it isn't too silly
This seems cool - link haven't tried it yet though.

weird. this is on my "to-do" list also. more and more i find myself thinking of doing something, and then i get to work, open up my browser, and find some article or people linking to the very thing i needed to research. interweb collective conciousness?
i watched a video of a TM seminar with david lynch. that got me thinking about doing this. not only as a stress relief but as a way to further tap into creative areas of the mind. sad to hear it may be a rip off though, tmns. i wouldn't pay thousands for a mantra, that's for sure.
i also have done informal meditation to basinski's disintegration loops. perfect music for letting the mind relax.

I find it difficult to meditate in the city. The street noise I can deal with, but the lady in the apartment above me I have dubbed "Old Stompy" (well, when I'm in a good mood). She also fills the bathtub at least twice a day, while stomping around, then drains it. Sometimes at night she'll yell out "FUCK OFF!" - but she lives alone (tourettes, I think)
Anyway sorry, OT.
I took a Tai Chi course years ago, I really liked it. It seemed to be really good for flexibility and circulation as well as just general body-awareness. But alas, I didn't keep it up.
As for meditation, I have always just done the 'unstructured' type, learned from reading books, mostly one by Shunryu Suzuki - I think it was a translation of lectures he gave. But I don't do it much anymore (see above). I know, no excuse really. I do feel less focused lately, come to think of it...

Chi gong/tai chi is great fun. I felt open to discovering it when I started, knew almost nothing about it, I felt wary of having high expectations & wanting to see progress (expectations seem to be what flummuxed previous attempts at learning stuff). I got lucky with a teacher I felt I respected who didn't lay it on think & a super nice bunch of people. Or maybe nice enough people and the environment brought out the best in them, I don't know.
Balance, awareness of your body. Yep, it's great stuff so far. I don't care if the metaphysical stuff is or isn't real. It offers enough excitement for me, and if there's anything else to be discovered I'll cross that bridge if/when I come to it.

"I don't care if the metaphysical stuff is or isn't real."
me either, but even more i think there's no difference. If you have experiences when you're meditating then those experiences are real, even if they're imaginative or hallucinatory. Since there's no real way of verifying whether the aliens you saw were really from the sirius system (or energy valences you penetrated or whatever), the question has no practical truth value, yea or nay. hence no difference.
Lynch was what got me thinking about this stuff as well. Yea TM seems like a bit of a scam, although it does seem to have some benefits if you can foot the bill. I dont recommend it - it's not quackery (at least the method itself, some of their claims about world peace and whatnot...), it's just not worth the mney. nyway, i'm about to head to the library, any recommendations for books to check out?
